Question / Help i5 2500k vs i7 4770k?

Hey, I'm using a i5 2500k right now and I'm debating buying a new motherboard and i7 4770k.

I'm just wondering if the 600 dollar upgrade will make much of a difference...

I would not do it unless you have very specific needs that only the 4770 could cover. And if you did, you wouldn't ask.

You could gain what, 20-30% overall performance in some cases. That's not enough to justify that expense, not in my mind anyway.
 
if you talk about streamin ... yes the i7 4770k is more than just worth it compared to the i5 2500k ... if it is just about gaming and stuff the i5 will probably just do its job

but 600$? what are you buying gold layerd mainbord?

and since you are planning on upgrading right now i would rather suggest buying the i7 4790k since it is the haswell refresh and should cost the same

i guess microcenter offers the cpu for 280$ and a good mainboard is around 100-150% so you are in the 400% area even if you would pay more for the cpu
 
I am talking about streaming, and in Canada after 13% tax a 109 dollar motherboard + the 4790k which is 369 dollars here comes to 540 dollars

well about streaming it is worth it for 100% and since sandy bridge doesnt support pcie 3.0 you would gain even more ingame performance


and holy shit canada is expensive... i thought germany is expensive but canda beats our taxes on electronics
 
PCI-Express 3.0 will not do much at all for in-game performance unless you do SLI/Crossfire. Single GPUs gain very little.

The i7 is good for streaming because it has Hyper-Threading, but we are definitely not talking about a 100% improvement there either.

What graphics card do you have? It might be worth exploring the NVENC hardware encoding route.
 
I'm using a gtx 570, not playing very graphically intensive games, just looking for an upgrade to stream in 1080p 30 fps with a good cpu preset.
 
Unfortunately the GTX 570 will not do NVENC because the chip does not have the video encoding hardware needed.

You might want to consider upgrading just the graphics card to a newer NVIDIA 600+ ("Kepler" or newer) series card and employing its hardware encoding rather than having the CPU to all the work.

There are arguments for and against this. The CPU X.264 encoder just looks better, but CPU load is considerable. The NVENC capable GPUs do take a hit when they have to encode, but that hit is a lot smaller.

I have a highly overclocked 2600K and I have streamed with both options. I always end up using NVENC because I can stream at higher fps with less impact on the game. My observation has been that streaming anything that moves a lot (First person games, but also stuff like Starcraft 2 where the map focus moves constantly) is overall better to do on NVENC. Streaming games that move slowly, I'd use the CPU for better quality.

I find that my games are mostly GPU limited, by a far margin, so I suggest a GPU upgrade rather than CPU/motherboard.
 
so when I update my OBS and get a say, gtx 780, I'll be able to switch the encoding setting to NVENC and then the gpu will do all the rendering?

EDIT: I see the setting, yeah, it's definitely grey'd out.
 
The GPU will do the encoding, yes.

Before you decide on a route, do read up on what NVENC can and can not do. There are the differences in quality compared to CPU, and I believe not all aspect ratios are supported (for instance 1920x1200 16:10). I don't believe you can stream windowed games or your desktop.
Please take that with a grain of salt and verify, those may have been older limitations no longer in place. There may be more. I still strongly prefer NVENC because of the speed and lower overhead, just don't want to claim it can do everything the CPU x.264 library can do.

And just to be complete, NVIDIA has a feature called ShadowPlay that has nothing to do with OBS, but is a somewhat different solution utilizing GPU encoding and frame capture. Interesting article: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7492/the-geforce-gtx-780-ti-review/3
 
I agree with hansmuff. A graphics card upgrade is much more interesting for you than a CPU + motherboard upgrade. Yes, the 4770 performs better than the 2500K, but the difference is simply not worth the money. If you're in the market for a bang for your buck card, consider the 750 Ti. It's an inexpensive card that can do NVENC. In terms of performance it's roughly the same as the card you own now. Otherwise, consider the 760 or the 770. Both are really good cards, and both are more affordable than the 780.
