My current computer has two graphics cards -- one modern card and one card which only exists to let me use more and older monitors. As far as I know, they both support NVENC (I can't find a good way to get a definitive yes/no, but the codenames given by HWiNFO are in wikipedia's list of cards that support NVENC). I have been having trouble with stuttering, encoder overloading, and dropped frames when using the NVENC encoder, so I am worried that OBS is using NVENC on the older card. I have found multiple forum threads regarding selecting a GPU for NVENC, but they seem to refer to a dropdown that just doesn't exist for me.
Similarly, on the settings page where I select the Direct3D renderer, there is not a dropdown to select which card is being used for rendering. The log indicates that the correct card is being used, but without a setting, I don't have confidence that the correct card will be chosen every time.
Possibly relevant: I keep the OBS window on a monitor which is connected to the older card. It doesn't make sense to me that this would cause an issue since OBS is in a window, but it is still worth noting.
Also: a lot of the threads I saw when trying to find a solution mentioned that in two-card systems, neither card will have an x16 connection, and I even bought an adapter that will let me go without the older card (at least for now) on the assumption that was true. However, HWiNFO revealed that the modern card does indeed have an x16 connection. Meanwhile, the older card only has an x4, which could further exacerbate any issues that come from OBS using the wrong GPU.
