First of all, I want to say hello to anybody who is reading this and apologize if there are some spelling mistakes or any kind of error as I don't speak english normally.

So, I've been messing arround whith the OBS studio settings for a while and I make it work, but I keep lagging/having a bad video quality si I decided to post a thread on the forums to know the appropiate settings to record on my laptop.

Specs:

-Intel i7-4720HQ 2.60 Hz (8 CPUs)
-16Gb RAM
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M
-OBS Studio installed on an SSD
-Videos storaged in HHD

What do I want?

I want to record games like Overwatch without lagging with a decent result (720p or 1080 @ 60fps) whithout framedrops.

And, I have one more question (I know, I'm boring :P)

-We have a game running in fullscreen: Should I capture the window or the whole screen (For the video to look better)?

Thanks if you read this and you can help me :).

Hey PloBS,

I'm not the most experienced guy on this forum but I figured I'd give it a shot since I've been researching OBS topics quite a bit lately.

FIRST OF ALL: Try the Auto Config option which is available in OBS 19.0.0

Overwatch is a very CPU dependent game, meaning that it will use a lot of your CPU resources. If you're trying to record using the x264 encoder (which is a software encoder), it will use even more of your CPU.
I would suggest opening your Windows Task Manager and checking your Performance tab to see what Usage% your CPU is running at without recording, just playing Overwatch. This will give you an idea of how much of a hit your CPU is already taking without trying to capture.

Once you get a feel for how much room your CPU has to move, you can look at low CPU settings and perhaps even consider using your GPU to record instead of CPU by using the NVEnc encoder.

Your question is very broad, so there's not much definite advice I can give you. Try the Auto Config option first and go from there.

Also, post a log. I'm not great at reading them, but anyone else who comes here with intentions of helping you will request a log to see what your OBS and system is doing during capture.

I'll try the autoconfigure option first. Also, I already use the Nvenc codec :P. Thanks!
