Question / Help How to stream at different aspect ratio by adding background

I am trying to stream at 16:9 aspect ratio because I feel the standard is 16:9.
By streaming at 16:9 ratio, people with 16:9 monitors will not see any black borders around the video.
I think 'majority' of people use 16:9 resolution monitor, so by doing this, I will be able to eliminate black borders for 'many' people. (Or am I completely wrong?)

Some common 16:9 ratios are:
1280 × 720
1600 x 900
1920 × 1080

However, my monitor resolution is 1280 x 1024 which has aspect ratio of 5:4. I was thinking of changing the video size to 1280 x 720, but people did not recommended me resizing the video as it will distort the video aspect ratio and reduce quality.

So I was wondering if it will be possible to stream at 16:9 by finding a wallpaper/image that has 16:9 resolution. Then put my video on the wallpaper. i.e. get 1920 x 1080 wallpaper and put my 1280 x 1024 video on the wallpaper.

But then another question is, should I not do resolution downscale and just put original 1280 x 1024 video on 1920 x 1080 wallpaper?
OR
should I do resolution downscale for my 1280 x 1024 video and put it on smaller 16:9 wallpaper?
i.e. 960 x 768 video on 1280 x 720 wallpaper
OR
does resolution downscale not matter if I have CPU power?...

Re: How to stream at different aspect ratio by adding backgr

OBS's resolution downscale will downscale everything in your scene, not individual sources. You will want to set your base resolution to a 16:9 resolution, and make a background image of the same resolution. Then place your video source above the background press the Edit Scene button to move it around and resize it as necessary to fit with your background.

Hmm,
so I cant downscale my scene 'individually' and put it on background image.

I do not want to change my base resolution to 16:9. I want to keep my resolution the same because I dont want to see black bars around on my monitor screen. Is it possible to put base resolution bigger than your monitor resolution? For my case, I have 1280x1024 resolution, but put 1920 x 1080 as base resolution and fill empty spaces with images/text? (I am asking instead of testing myself because I am currently using different computer :D)

So instead of downscaling resolution, I need to resize the video through the Edit Scene feature and put it on the image...

From other forums, I was told not to resize video normally because it can distort aspect ratio, but I guess it is fine with Edit feature of OBS because as long as I dont press 'Shift' it keeps the aspect ratio?...

Re: How to stream at different aspect ratio by adding backgr

Sorry, I mean your OBS base resolution, not your monitor resolution. You WILL need to change your OBS base resolution to a 16:9 resolution if you want to stream at 16:9. But your monitor resolution doesn't have to be 16:9, even if your OBS base resolution is.

I have a monitor with an aspect ratio of 16:10 and resolution is 1440x900. Should I lower my resolution in order to stream? I'm thinking of using 1280x720

@silvertunazz You can't downscale a 16:10 resolution to a 16:9 resolution. Whether or not you should downscale in general will depend on your PC and the content you plan to stream.
