Advanced encoding settings
Recommended bitrates, codecs, and resolutions, and more
Container: .mp4

No Edit Lists (or you may lose AV sync) how to do this
moov atom at the front of the file (Fast Start) how to do this

Audio Codec: AAC-LC

Channels: Stereo or Stereo + 5.1 how to do this
Sample rate 96khz or 48 khz how to do this

Video Codec: H.264

Progressive scan (no interlacing) how to do this
High Profile how to do this
2 consecutive B frames how to do this
Closed GOP. GOP of half the frame rate. how to do this
CABAC how to do this
Variable bitrate. No bitrate limit required, though we offer recommended bit rates below for reference
Color Space: 4.2.0 how to do this

Frame rates
Frame rates should match the source material. For example, content shot in 24fps should be encoded and uploaded at 24fps. Content recorded at 30fps should be uploaded at 30fps. Content shot in 720p60, should be uploaded at 720p60. Content at 1080i 60, should be deinterlaced, going from 60 interlaced fields per second to 30 progressive frames per second before uploading.
Bitrates
Standard quality uploads
Type Video Bitrate Mono Audio Bitrate Stereo Audio Bitrate 5.1 Audio Bitrate
2160p (4k) 35-45 Mbps 128 kbps 384 kbps 512 kbps
1440p (2k) 10 Mbps 128 kbps 384 kbps 512 kbps
1080p 8,000 kbps 128 kbps 384 kbps 512 kbps
720p 5,000 kbps 128 kbps 384 kbps 512 kbps
480p 2,500 kbps 64 kbps 128 kbps 196 kbps
360p 1,000 kbps 64 kbps 128 kbps 196 kbps

some of the "how to do this" i alredy know how to do but others i dont
No Edit Lists (or you may lose AV sync)
moov atom at the front of the file (Fast Start)
Progressive scan (no interlacing)
High Profile

those are the ones i need help with but it would be nice if someone were to make a guide on how to set up obs to match this file

i figure if your file matches this then youtube wont rape it

I came here looking for the exact same thing.

Can someone point me in the direction of a guide or faq about how to best encode for YouTube with OBS?

I would record high quality with OBS, then run it through Handbrake.

Set video res to "Auto"
Check the box for MP4 web
Set encoder speed to faster or medium for better encode quality
Leave Framerate on variable and matching source
leave the slider on 20.

Should create smaller file, 99% same quality, and ready for YouTube. Don't believe me?

I capture my videos at 1080p60 at 25Mbps, then encode them in Handbrake, reducing some 4GB files to 1-2GB, then upload to YoTube.

Check out my quality here - YouTube.com/punkmonk34557

Why would you do that instead of uploading the original to youtube? Encoding twice is always going to reduce the quality.

For me, simply to reduce file size. Honestly, the quality loss is negligible for the size reduction.

Mkay, I'm looking to skip using Handbrake and try to just record with OBS uploading straight to YpuTube.

So the top tip for using OBS to record for YouTube is; Record in near lossless and use Handbrake?

Youtube completely butchers anything you upload to it. I thought it wouldn't if you encode a video with x264 with good settings (as in there woudn't be anything more to compress about it), but no, after taking a screenshot of Battefield 4 footage I uploaded, I was horrified. It's completely pointless to use Youtube if you're after quality.

It's important to note also that uploading 1440p or 2160p must be done at 30FPS exactly. YouTube wants 30FPS, when I try uploading 2160p60fps the upload is automatically reduced to 1080p60fps.

My 2160p30fps uploads aren't butchered at all. I upload a lot of 4K content to YouTube, recording at 2160p30fps (YouTube requires 30FPS exactly for 1440p+ uploads)

Youtube destroys the quality because it uses a "fast" x264 preset which ,combined with the low bit rate, causes a significant loss in quality. What you should be doing is minimising the quality loss before you upload

Like, LtRoyalShrimp has mentioned, you should record the video in the highest quality possible using obs studio
and if your internet is fast enough, upload it directly to youtube but if the file size is too big then compress it with handbrake.

I've personally been using this method (Without Handbrake) and i'm getting decent results on my videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcjGJ5IjV80

@Mike Callan The reason why your uploads dont lose as much quality as others is because when you upload your 2k videos, youtube uses the VP9 codec instead of the standard x264 codec. The VP9 codec is much more efficent in maintaining quality compared to x264 however this codec is only used (AFAIK) if the video resolution is above 1080p and/or your video gets a decent amount of views
