Question / Help How To Rescale Output Correctly?

My monitor has a fairly weird resolution of 1680x1050.

This creates a rather unappealing black border on the sides of the screen for viewers.

I tried rescaling it to 1980x1080 but it didn't really work... I'm not even sure what it did, but it just stretched the screen somehow without removing the borders.

1680x1050 is aspect ratio 16:10, while the common 1920x1080 is aspect ratio 16:9.

The ratio of 16:10 is "more quadratic" than 16:9. That means if you scale something with 16:10 to the same width as a 16:9 aspect ratio resolution, there are some superfluous pixels at the top and at the bottom. You can either cut this or scale to the same height, but in case of scaling you have not enough pixels at the left and the right, you you get the black borders.

You can stretch the image to cover the black borders, or you can cut pixels to get from ratio 16:10 to 16:9, but you always distort your image or remove parts of it.

If you want to produce some 16:9 video, it's best if your source has the same aspect ratio in the first place. If you want to record or stream your desktop, which has a ratio of 16:10 with 1680x1050, change to a desktop resolution that has aspect ratio 16:9. For example, change it to 1680x945 or 1680x944 (945 as odd number confuses some encoders, so try 944 if you have problems). Now your monitor will probably show small black borders on the top and on the bottom, but your recorded videos will contain proper 16:9 aspect ratio content without the borders.
