Question / Help How to identify a sources resolution/frame rates if it is p/i to select the best capture card?

Unlike CRT- and LCD-TV which are quite flexible to display basically everything, including non-standard resolutions, with frame rates, even if they deviate from the mostly encountered standards e.g. PAL SVHS player when playing NTSC tape material, digicam, I've read that capturing like Blackmagic won't work unless you know if the sources resolution, frame rate, and if it is progressive or interlaced.

The standards for analogue and digital video sources can be searched in the web, however if a source is compliant with them, or if developpers produce a quick and dirty implementation that mostly work on TV and monitors, but not necessarily can be easily captured . I find it difficult to identify which resolution, frame rates, and progressive or interlaced are needed, since this information is not listed in the equipment manual.

As for sources I do not want to capture from game consoles, but sources up to full HD ranging from (multistandard) (S)VHS recorder, (S)VCD, DVD, videocam, digicam DSLR to computers. So far I own/use a HAUPAUGE WINTV PVR USB 2 and a Terratec Cameo 800 Firewire capture card/box for analogue composite or SVHS sources.

Any idea how to identify this information or do I just have to buy apture cards like the xcapture and try may luck.

PS.: I use windows 7 64 Bit, ad want to connect a capture card via an expresscard USB 3.0 controller (Renesas/NEC) interface with my notebook, since newer HP notebooks now have the USB 3.0 in the intel chipset.

Capturing worked fine so far wth my analogue capture cards for most sources I tried over the years. Now I want to replace them and buy a capturcard that is flexible in the frame rate and can support up to 1080p/i. I was looking at blackmagic and read that you many had problems capturing unless you know the specs for the video source e.g. digicam HDMI output.

Looking through my manuals I did not always find the video outputs specifications. Thats why I asked if anyone knows how to identify the spec of a video source, in order to identify which capture cards to look at
