How does this software work?

I purchased Avermedia EZMaker 7 in order to convert old VHS tapes to a digital file but have really been winging it trying to figure it out, as there were no instructions given (other than how to install it). I emailed Aver but they just installed OBS and that's all the further info I got. Is the OSB software supposed to be easier than using EZ maker or is it just for editing what one has already converted from VHS format?

Use the capture device to convert the VHS to a USB then using your PC and OBS ? you should be able to add the Aver-media device as source similar to webcam or capture card and record the content to MP4.

Here's a video series that should get you going, with fundamental information:

Your EZMaker should be able to be added as a Video Capture Device source.

NEVER RECORD DIRECTLY TO MP4 FOR ANY REASON.
It is NOT a recording-safe format; if ANYTHING goes wrong before the video is finalized, the entire recording will be corrupted and 100% not recoverable. Additionally, video editing programs tend to have problems with the MP4s that OBS outputs. Record to FLV or MKV, then use the 'Remux Recordings' function under OBS' File menu to convert them to MP4s if needed.
Please don't tell new users to record to MP4.
