How do I save stream to external device?

as semantics matter
- typically 'streams' are referred to that which gets sent to content delivery networks (YouTube, etc). And most CDN heavily compress videos, so if quality is important to you, that is usually not what you want to re-download and save
- on the other hand, if you mean a local recording, then OBS interface lets you select where to store a local recording, including externally. But beware
- disk I/O requirements for your recording ... make sure you have enough throughput for your local recording
- And that all external drives are not the same in terms of sustained write throughput performance and write endurance

I record locally to a fast NVMe drive, and then remux. After which, I delete the MKV, and move the remuxed file to a HDD for longer-term archiving.
