The Studio Mode works slightly different:
  1. You selecting scene (Switch to scene in Preview);
  2. You performing Transition (Quick Transitions as well, if you need number of predefined effects) to force selected scene (from #1) to output.
All this actions possible through the hotkeys or mouse clicks.

Direct takes is not possible in Studio Mode unless you are performing double-click over the scene (controlled via Settings>General>Studio Mode) in Scenes pane or in Multiview.

"Direct takes is not possible in Studio Mode"

In the Hotkeys configuration window I got it to work by adding fields below "Quick Transition: Cut" and assigning keys to those fields, as well as to the "Switch to scene" fields for each scene. So the keys on the program bus are assigned in two places: In the added fields below "Quick Transition:Cut" and in "Switch to scene" for each scene.

I have also added fields below "Switch to scene" and have assigned function keys there. They control the preview window.

Is there a reason this would not work or could not be made to work?

So, you got it to work? What you expecting from OBS Studio? You want new special key - direct take key with customization of transition effect to be implemented or what?

The keys work once configured, however, they do not work immediately upon program startup. To make them work it is necessary to execute a Transition using the "Transition" button located on the main window between the Preset and Program windows. This could confuse users. My only request is that the keys be made to work upon program startup without first "initializing" them by executing this transition.

Here is the configuration I am using.

Please note that "1" and "F1 appear twice but this is done only for testing. "BRIO" is a Logitech BRIO webcam. "Black" and "Blue" are colored backgrounds. In normal operation, black is assigned to the ` key and to the escape key, much as you would have on a conventional video switcher. The webcams and blue background can be assigned to any keys, but it is probably preferable to keep the numbering consistent, e.g. assign "camera two" to "2" and to "F2".

When you start the application the Scenes list has last scene selected (this selected state of any control element named like: the element has keyboard/input focus). You need to click at Preview view (the left one) to change the input focus to Preview. Or you may click at other UI element (Transition button, Settings button, Duration spinbox etc.) or Tab to it via keyboard to change the input focus.

When element from Scenes pane (or Sources) has input focus (you can browse elements by arrows keys, rename sources etc.) OBS Studio disables user defined hotkeys. This done intentionally.

By the way, I noticed that I don't see shortcuts (Del, Ctrl+E, Ctrl+R, F11 etc.) reminders in the menus of my OBS Studio (v21.1.0). Do you have "Remove Del" or just "Remove" in right-click menu over the scene/source?
