Question / Help High Quality Local Recording Jitters and Stutters

Hey there,

I'm trying to use OBS with my AverMedia Live Gamer HD C985 to record some 1080p 30fps Xbox One walkthroughs for my YouTube channel. I noticed yesterday that I would randomly (every minute or so) get these "stutter" or "jitter" spots in my recordings where it seems like the video is losing frames for no perceivable reason.

I uploaded the stuttering video as unlisted to my channel, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSIBH1PftEc
The video starts a three second jitter at around 31 seconds. It's pretty subtle, but it's definitely there and probably annoying for the viewer. Also, it only happens once in that video.

I've attached the log files to this post for that same recording.

With zero luck, I've spent maybe 5 hours searching these forums and watching YouTube videos to find a solution for the stuttering video. I've also already looked at and used this post: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/how-to-make-high-quality-local-recordings.16/

I just can't seem to find a solution here. Any sort of help would be much appreciated!

On another note, it'd be nice to know where my computer's sweet spot lies for high quality recordings. File size isn't super important because I am not editing the video and I have gigapower internet.

Thanks,

JV

I can barely see the stutter, but even I with a i7-4790k have sometimes some kind of that, it's either a sudden peak bitrate or the game itself stutters for a few moments (I could only see it because I saw the frame rate drop of 3-4 Frames in my game for about 1 second for no visible reason at all.)

It can't be the game stuttering because it's totally smooth while I'm playing. I can play and watch both my monitor and TV and it only stutters on the monitor with OBS recording.

I also noticed the same thing happening with Far Cry 4 on Xbox One. If you skip to 4:25 and watch me back up the ATV, you can see the stutter here too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXh5C0aS6Tc

If the issue is a sudden peak bitrate, how do I prevent that? I've read some about CBR and how it should only be used for streaming, but maybe it would help my issue by stabilizing the bitrate?

Also I noticed the quality on both videos is really poor for 1080p. Any ideas on how to get the best quality with my machine? I've attached my logs again to this post.

Since I posted this thread, I went back to RECentral (the software that came with my Live Gamer HD) and recorded some footage at 30 mbs. It looks much better and has none of the stuttering that I am talking about. I would much prefer using OBS for high quality local recording. RECentral introduces some audio/video desyncing issues that I can't have in my walkthroughs because I'm uploading straight to YouTube without editing.

That the 1080p quality on YT is poor is quite normal. Youtube encodes any high bitrate to merely 6000 kb/s average Bitrate.

I can't see any stuttering in that Far Cry Video at all. how you see the stutter?
What player you use to playback your footage?
If it's VLC than you was fooled as me because vlc can't playback OBS files properly. Use the Media Player instead!
Also that the OBS preview seems to stutter is kind of an illusion. If I watch the video on my second screen It seems to me stutter just by a little bit too but the footage playback is ok.

I suppose "stutter" isn't the best way to describe what I am seeing. I think it's just loss of frames. Like I said, the issue is very subtle, but it's definitely there. To answer your question about media players, I was using Windows Media Player and already tried pulling up the recording in VLC. There was no difference between the two, both had the same issue.

As of now I just went with RECentral for my local recording needs. I realize OBS is primarily used for streaming, and I will definitely return to the program when I do stream in the future.

Thanks for the help!

@Sapiens hmm but I tested it and VLC alsways loses Frames that look like lags to me and I dont have those with the WMP so why is that? Yes you can Play the files with VLC but for some reasons it skipps alot of frames during playback.

@PrinceVic I have no idea why that happens, I'm not involved with the VLC project and have no interest in troubleshooting their software. :) While I don't doubt you're having issues with VLC, my point was that just because you have issues with it doesn't mean everyone does. It is capable of playing back OBS files without any difficulty, and is usually the program we recommend when people have playback issues using other programs like Windows Media Player.

@Sapiens I helped someone with that information who thought the recordings are "laggy" and it "solved" his Problem. Thats the only reason I mentioned it. Maybe I just phrased it a little harsh/wrong. Sry.

I recently switched to OBS and encountered this same issue with my Avermedia C027. After trying OBS I refuse to use anything else because it has all the features I want but this one micro stutter problem is driving me crazy. I've used all kinds of software over the past 4 years and OBS is the only one that does this but I noticed that after many hours of playing the audio and video never once lagged or desynched, is this somehow related?

I want to say that there are core issues with OBS (mainly fps handling) due to it being hacked and chopped up over the years. I've noticed a lot of stutter with OBS compared to Shadowplay recordings. The new version is shaping up quite nicely, though.
