Question / Help High Ping in action while streaming

Just got into streaming a couple months ago and started with Xsplit but I wanted to try out OBS because I had heard good things. Overall I love the program, but I've had a big problem with it causing my ping to skyrocket anytime there is action on the screen. The game I was trying to stream was Natural Selection 2 (a FPS). And I know what everyone is going to point out as the problem - my internet: my upload speed is about 0.9 mbps. Normally I would accept this as a standard case of "sorry bro, internet sucks too much to stream" BUT I have streamed on Xsplit with higher settings and zero problems. For comparison:

OBS - I was streaming at 480p with quality on 5, max bitrate at 700, buffer at 400 (although I also tried leaving it at the default as well), 30 fps, and audio at 64. These were all as low or lower than the suggested settings from here:http://obsproject.com/estimator. I was not dropping any frames or having any fps issues, my ping would simply climb rapidly anytime there was any movement on the screen.

Xsplit - I've streamed many times at close to 720p (it's definitely not ACTUAL 720p, but it looks similar. It is definitely extremely higher resolution than the 480p that was causing ping spikes in OBS). I don't drop frames nor have I ever had ping problems.

So what gives? Why is OBS causing problems on much lower settings than Xsplit? And this is definitely not a "Xsplit is better" post - I really would prefer to use OBS, thus I'd like to see if there is a way to fix this problem. Because obviously, despite my terrible internet, I can stream, just so far not with OBS.

Lastly, my computer specs in case that matters at all:
i7-2600k @ 4.4 ghz
Radeon HD 6970
16 GB RAM
Windows 7

Thanks in advance for any help!

Also, if your ping only spikes during periods of high action, try enabling CBR, which should balance out your transfer speeds and reduce bandwidth spikiness.

Experiencing this issue. Tried CBR, MNI, and automatic low latency. MNI worked before. Not anymore..
