Question / Help High Encoding / Dropped Frames when previously fine

Hey all,

Recently, I've been noticing some really bad streaming issues in regards to High Encode warnings and terrible dropped frames. I've never really had these issues before and I was wondering if I'm missing something? I was always able to do 720p/60fps without fail in any game. Within the last 2 weeks or so, it's been bad. I've checked my settings, doesn't appear to be anything out of line or different than what I've done before. My internet is 180/15 and solid. My system is a 970/16 gigs of RAM/i5 2500k @ 4.2ghz. It's always been enough. Below is my DxDiag and recent log file. VOD's are showing skipping every 2-3 seconds and it appears to be unable to play back smoothly. Viewers are reporting same.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm prepared to upgrade if my i5 is reaching end of life. Just wanted to see if I messed something up along the way. :)

Thanks. That seemed to stop the overall skipping and horrible playback, although the quality could be better. VSync really kills my mouse "feel" in game so I would prefer not to use if it at all possible. Could you maybe talk about why VSync worked? Here is a log file from the stream that worked.

Vsync works because it limits the game's rendering speed to your monitor's refresh rate, usually 60 Hz and thus 60 FPS. If you don't like the feel of vsync and enabling triple buffering doesn't help either then you can use the FPS limiter option in Overwatch instead. Without vsync or some form of FPS limiter the game will just render as many frames per second as your hardware is capable of, maxing out your CPU or GPU, and leaving virtually no free resources for OBS to function.

That makes sense. Thank you for your time. I don't know why I didn't think of this. Do you see any other settings that may be causing issues?

I tried the FPS limiter in game and turning vsync off, same issue. It's a slideshow on the VOD, but playing perfect in game.

What did you set the limit to? Your 970 will handle 60 FPS on Ultra at 1080p, but it will max out if you use the option to render at a higher resolution like 1.5x, or set the limiter very high like 120.

I have the options for Off, Display Based (which I assume is 60), or 30fps. Here is a log where I used VSync/Triple Buffering/Display based FPS limit. Made the mouse/control feel awful, but the stream ran very well.

This is so odd to me. I took a break from streaming for awhile and changed no settings. I've never used VSync in any game and streamed perfectly before. I doubt something changed in OBS in that time frame. Again, thank you for trying to help. This is stumping me big time. Would turning on VSync in the Nvidia control panel for the game make a difference?

A short clip of the above settings: https://www.twitch.tv/thedigitalbench/v/65531886

Could you test at 30 FPS and see if it makes a difference? I've noticed some very slight hitching at 60 FPS when streaming/recording Overwatch specifically, and while I don't get a CPU usage warning it was annoying enough that I dropped the stream to 30 FPS and it went away.

Edit: Could you also keep an eye on CPU usage while playing just to make sure it isn't getting unreasonably high?

I will test @ 30 and report back. While I was streaming an Action RPG with the same settings (Grim Dawn), I noticed CPU usage was like 70-80%? This is odd.
