Help! The recordings from my ultrawide screen are in 2524x1080 instead of 2560x1080.

When using OBS, I've noticed that my recorded footage was slightly lower quality/pixelated when the footage is played while fullscreen in a video playback software. However, it was perfect quality when windowed, even when entirely stretched out across the display, as long as it wasn't dedicated fullscreen.

This problem persisted across different recording software (Action! from Mirillis), different games and different video playback software.

After tinkering with the settings of Action! from Mirillis trying to find the problem, I discovered that my screen apparently records in 2524x1080 instead of 2560x1080. How can I fix this?

This is more or less proven by the fact that, in OBS, when I choose 2560x1080 for both my Base Resolution and Output resolution, OBS says that the aspect ratio is 64:27, while it should be 21:9 (which correlates to 63:27).

Just for comparison, when I choose 1920x1080 for both my Base Resolution and Output resolution, OBS says that the aspect ratio is 16:9, like it should.

Seeing as the problem persists across different recording software, different games and different video playback software, I assume the problem is related to either my monitor or my display settings in Windows 10. However, at first glance, my display settings seem correct.

What could be causing this and how can I fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Please recreate the problem, and provide a copy of those log files -- it contains the information needed for the video card and resolutions.

We need a log file of a recording attempt. The logs provided do in fact show your monitor's resolution as 2560x1080, but nothing about what the encoder is being fed.

Btw, 2560x1080 is in fact 64x27, or 21.333:9.

Is this it? I used "Upload Current Log File" while recording.

Also, I noticed yesterday, that my games and videos have the slightly blurry and pixelated look by themselves when they're being played fullscreen, without recording whatsoever.

So, it's like my screen doesn't output fullscreen like it should, it's most likely that 2524x1080 resolution stretched out over the 2560x1080 screen, resulting in the slightly lower quality.

However, all my settings seem to indicate that everything is at 2560x1080.

I update my GPU driver and Windows to the latest versions.

I have no idea what's causing my pc to output 2524x1080 at fullscreen.

What MediaInfo application says about your recording (text)?

It probably has nothing to do with the recording, as I recently found out, the gameplay and videos are slightly blurry when fullscreen as opposed to maximized windowed mode.

Seeing as my recordings are 2524x1080, it seems that my screen isn't probably rendering the intended resolution at fullscreen for some reason.

I updated all relevant drivers and Windows, but no luck.

Under the "Display" category in Radeon Software, under "Display Specs", it says:

Display - Horizontal: 2560
Display - Vertical: 1080

Total - Horizontal: 2720
Total - Vertical: 1111

So, the first set of numbers are correct, but the total resolution seems to be incorrect, which could be the source of the problem.

I tried changing the second set of numbers by making a custom resolution in Radeon Software, but it says "The custom resolution settings are not compatible with this display". So, that won't work either.

Any fix?

If the issue is happening outside of OBS, then it would suggest a potential driver issue and recommend starting there. You can try to roll back to a previous version. If there are any advanced settings for the graphics card, also confirm there are no mismatches there.

Well, I managed to fix 1 half of the problem. The low quality fullscreen games were the result of Radeon Image Sharpening.

Disabling it fix that part of the problem.

The recorded gameplay has also improved in quality by extent. However, it's still not entirely the same as the actual gameplay. It's slightly less sharp. It's like that when I record MP4 files, but also if I record AVI files with a bitrate of 100 Mbps.

Is this normal? Is recorded gameplay always just a tad worse than the actual source material, even if you more or less max out the recording settings?

Try disabling the Deblocking Filter, this filter reduces sharpness.
11:39:43.993: [AMF] [H264]<Id: 3> Deblocking Filter: Enabled

With your set-up, I would be encoding with x264.

With the AMD hardware encoder, yes. It's always a bit grainy, regardless the bitrate. True indistinguishable quality is achievable, although only with Nvenc (the hardware encoder of Nvidia cards) as well as Quicksync (the hardware encoder of Intel iGPUs), and of course the x264 software encoder that is a huge CPU drain. Quicksync is only that good if you use non-CBR/VBR rate controls, i. e. if you record only and not stream.

Nvenc is truly a gem for streamers and for video recording in general, especially on the RTX cards, as well as on GTX 1660 or GTX 1650 SUPER, since it produces quality as good as x264 medium to slow with zero CPU demand and almost zero GPU demand. The AMD encoder uses up GPU resources.
