Question / Help HELP PLS! Computer lags while streaming and playing sc2.

Hey all,

I'm trying to see what it is in my setup that's causing my stream and game to lag immensely.

Possibly my old cpu, weak gpu, or maybe my settings.

My system right now is:

CPU - Core i5 760 2.80GHz
GPU - EVGA GTX 750
RAM - 8GB

Speedtest - http://www.speedtest.net/result/4648866420.png

Recorded Twitch vod of lag-
http://www.twitch.tv/de_dunetv/v/15021635 (skip to around 29 mins and see the lag that I'm talking about)

Here's (what I think to be) the log file of the video in question:

I'm not really the most knowledgeable about things like the settings and stuff, so if there's any other information you need, pls don't hesitate to ask.
If anyone could help shine some light on the matter, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks a lot guys. Take care.

Need a bump!
If anyone has information or recommended settings, I would love to hear back from you guys.

logwise everything is fine i'd actually only suggest, since your cpu is 1st gen of the intel i series that it struggles with encoding, that you use super or even ultrafast preset to free up cpu usage (sc2 is quite cpu intensive)

default scene buffering time would be 700 instead of 400

in some cases it can help if you disable aero in some cases the issue gets worse, but its always something easy to test.

Hi alpinlol, thanks for the reply!

I will test those differences that you mentioned. Hopefully that will make some significant changes.
I'm considering upgrading my cpu to an i5 4460, with hopes that that should be enough to stream at a better quality.
Either that or a i5 4690k, but I don't really have any intentions to overclock.

Do you think an upgrade like this would solve my issues? Will either of those cpus be good enough?

Thanks again for the help, will keep the thread updated and post my result with those new recommended settings.

if you have no intentions in overclocking i'd actually suggest buying an intel xeon e3 1231v3 comes at around the same price as the i5 but is actually an i7 which leads to better performance for streaming + gaming since i5 are just not made for both.

alpinlol - thanks for your recommendation, I will start looking into the xeon e3 1231v3 and a supporting motherboard for it. Hopefully find one in the area where I can get a good deal for it. From what I've read (in the few minutes since you posted the suggestion) they mentioned that the xeon is more a workstation type of cpu, but I believe that I should be able to game on it as well. I'll have to look more into it.

Harold - thanks for the reply. I have been considering getting the 4460 or 4690k because I wish to live stream with it as well, hoping that it would be sufficient. But from what I've read and also alpinlol's recommendation, they mention that the i5 really isn't made for both gaming and streaming at the same time. So I'm actually really interested to see/read up more about the xeon, with hopes that it'll be able to fulfill my urge to both play and stream simultaneously.

Thanks again for the replies guys. I'll continue to keep this thread updated.
Be well.

In that performance bracket, the 4770k and 4790k i7 chips offer similar performance to the xeon with the added ability to use quicksync for local recording. Those might be worth looking into as well.

Hi Harold, thanks for the quick reply.
I was looking into the i7s as well but the price gap between the i5 to the xeon is much smaller than to the i7. So I'm really starting to consider the xeon for price=performance ratio.
You did bring up a good point about Quicksync though. But I'm not necessarily sure what that does or if it's even important. I did see it a few times in other people's posts and also in the advanced menu, but never really fiddled with it.

Is quicksync important? Or could I do without it? I was kind of hoping that the xeon will be enough to play and stream at x264 and I wouldn't need to use quicksync as an encoding method. Though I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks again for the replies. Hope you have a great day.
Be well.

Quicksync, when used for recording, takes your overall cpu use for encoding to near-0 compared to x264. It offloads the h264 encoding to a dedicated portion of the processor.

So in layman's terms, I'll benefit more to get a CPU which allows Quicksync?
If i7's are out of the question at the moment, would it still be a good idea to get the Xeon? an i5 4460/4690 or even an AMD FX8350?
I will mostly be playing and streaming sc2 and csgo, as well as any other new-ish game that I purchase.
I really wouldn't want to spend much more than $300 if I could help it.

I appreciate your help, Harold. Much thanks.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply Harold!

After your suggestion earlier, I started looking into those i7s you mentioned. And was able to find a really good i7-4790 at a huge discount and they have the option to deliver. So I'm thinking about getting that instead. Though I'll need to find a compatible Mobo that doesn't break the bank.
Is it right for me to assume that a i7-4790 (non-k) should be sufficient enough to run a quality stream?

This exchange has really helped me get closer to completing my computer upgrade task in proper fashion. Again, much thanks.

The non-k 4790 is pretty decent and should be plenty for streaming/recording at the same time as gaming. Most of the intel chips you've been looking at all work on the same family of motherboards.
