Need Help with OBS Settings for Smooth 4K 60 FPS Recording!

Hey everyone!

I'm having some issues with OBS and could really use some help finding the right settings for my PC.

My goal is to record gameplay in 4K at 60 FPS with the best possible image quality, but whenever I try to record at that resolution, the recording starts lagging and stuttering. OBS also shows the “Encoding overloaded” warning.

The weird thing is that my game itself runs perfectly fine. It's only the recording that has problems. I've tried different recommended OBS settings, but nothing seems to fix the issue.

What's even stranger is that 4K 60 FPS recording used to work fine for me, but suddenly it doesn't anymore. I don't know what changed.

My PC specifications:

  • CPU: Intel Core i9-10900K
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
  • RAM: 64 GB DDR4
  • Storage: 2 TB M.2 NVMe SSD + additional SSD/HDD storage
  • Recording software: OBS Studio

I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me find the correct OBS settings for my hardware.

My priority is 4K 60 FPS recording with crisp, high-quality footage and no stuttering. If 4K isn't possible for some reason, I'd be happy with 1440p (2K) at 60 FPS, but I'd really like to get 4K working again since it worked before.

What encoder, preset, rate control, and other settings would you recommend for my setup? Could this be an encoder issue, GPU overload, or something else?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

recognize that games, OS and driver updates, etc means that hardware resource load years ago, and now can be materially different. And then there are changes to defaults, plugins, etc with in OBS Studio

So, that something used to work, and now doesn't... isn't a surprise. And some recent new GPU features can conflict with OBS Studio Recording. All is fine until you reach bottleneck state... and it isn't always easy to figure out root cause. You need to consider overall OS and OBS Studio resource demands, then the game, and whether your game and associated GPU settings conflict with OBS Studio trying to capture the same.

As for settings, anyone who gives you a pat answer should be treated with real suspicion, as a technically correct answer ... depends (on a lot not said, posted, etc). Start with posting OBS Studio log setting from recent problem session per pinned post

In my experience, many users are unfamiliar with background processes at OS layer, and their resource impacts. Then, lots of threads of game settings like high monitor refresh rates not aligned with FPS, and related, that can cause issues. And Win11 bugs haven't helped matters.
