Question / Help Help! No in-game audio using a StarTech Capture card.

Hello and thank you for reading this.

I decided this past Christmas that I was going to set-up dual computer streaming. I did a lot of research and found that everyone likes the AverMedia cards but I already had a StarTech capture card that I use for my Camcorder. Now, I tested my set-up with a second laptop and I have crystal clear 1080p 60fps video, but not even an ounce of audio in OBS. The "Stream Catcher" software that comes with my current capture card allows for some in-game audio to come through, (It worked with SC2 but not with Endless Space), but does not work with OBS. Unfortunately the capture card I have doesn't present itself as a audio in/output in either OBS or my audio Playback devices in my computer audio settings.

I have researched even more and I found that most people are using some "Scarlet" mixer that allows for audio to transfer between my Gaming PC and my Streaming PC, I'm only hoping there is a way I can transfer the audio from the HDMI cord that I am already using.

Any help would be wonderful.

Please tell us the model number of your capture card, Star Tech have multiple different models available and also provide a log of a recording or streaming session where you have no audio, instructions for supplying a log are here:

It just confuses me that the software with it has audio, but OBS somehow isn't tracking it.

OK well that card isn't on the supported list of capture cards which you can find here: https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/list-with-supported-capture-cards.5655/ so I am not sure if it should work or not.

Are you using the HDMI or the DVI port?

Also don't forget the log file when you can :-)

I'm using a HDMI cord from the Gaming PC to capture card. Surprisingly it does work for video.

I don't understand what you mean by Log files. For the program or OBS or what?

If you are using HDMI then you need to make sure that your gaming PC is using the HDMI port on your graphics card as it's audio out and not your default desktop speakers for instance. To check this go to Windows, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Sound and then choose the Playback tab. You should see a list of HDMI ports, my graphics card is Nvidia so I have an Nvidia High Definition Audio device in that list. I select this as my Default Device and so when a game is running all Audio from the game will head to that device and along the HDMI cable to my capture card.

We have tried that and the gaming PC can and does transfer audio, but OBS doesn't seem to recognize the capture card as a audio source or even an option.

What audio output mode is selected in the capture source properties?

We were using "Capture Audio only" but I just looked at the "custom" button and the Capture card is one listed. Will that work?

Capture audio only should put the audio into the recordings/stream.
If you want to hear the audio from the computer's speakers, output desktop audio (directsound) should work.

Just try this one thing, dont use any windows programs to watch the video, just use another program like KMplayer (not sponsored) and it shall work i guessm, try it

VLC is our recommended media player.

Personally I would use Kodi as an alternate if VLC doesn't work.

I had the same problem as the OP. The fix was to edit the video capture device, select Use Custom Audio Device, and choose CY1304 USB Analog 01 WaveIn.

dont use hdmi for audio, use LAN, voicemeeter banana is free and great to transfer audio over network.
check VBAN in the tool out.
