I am looking to buy my first camcorder.

I've narrowed it down to a Canon Vixia HF R82 which has Wi-Fi, or an HF R800 which has an HDMI output and a USB output.

I would like to be able to stream this camera using OBS.

As I understand it, the HDMI/USB option would require a capture card. The Wi-Fi option would connect wirelessly to my router and could be streamed by means of some hocus-pocus which I do not fully understand.

In either case, would OBS recognize whichever camera as a video capture device?

Which would be the preferable option? I don't mind getting a capture card if that is preferable.

Im not familiar with camcorders, but you should avoid wi-fi completely. Its not reliable connection and sooner or later will cause problems. just my 2 cents

Wireless can be fraught with issues, so going with a hardwired setup (while less convenient) can be more reliable. Only you know how reliable your wi-fi is, what you need for your setup, and just how much portability you need.

As to hooking up a Wi-Fi video camera to OBS, what does Canon say about being able to view the output of the camera? Are there any pages in the manual that go into detail about how to view said stream? If you have to use their program (and it's the only thing that works with their camera), then odds are you'll have a poor experience.

Then odds are (unless you can find some hacker tools online) that you'll have to use the HDMI version.

I have R50, R62, R60, and R700 canons- the output is all about the same as I can tell - the wifi control sucks in my option. I don't think mine to streaming. I'm doing HDMI to cheap HDMI/SDI converter $40 - 600 ft of cable to Black Magic DeckLink QUAD SDI about $500. I've also played with a Teradek ViDiU Mini HDMI - that's HDMI to wifi that's also about $500.

What I've also used if close enough to your computer is usb cameria i.e. about 5 ft - is a Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 - if you zoom in it also lets you move the image area around with it's control software - it's about $70
