Question / Help Hearthstone Local Recordings: Why won't the pillarboxes go away!

Hey everybody,

I have been using OBS for a couple months now, mostly for local recordings. I have encountered a strange problem whenever I try to record Hearthstone locally.

Before I get into the specific problem, I should mention that whenever I view any of the MP4 files I record locally of non-Hearthstone games using OBS in the Windows Media Player, there are always small pillarboxes. However, they disappear when pushed into video editing software, and are never present once they are uploaded to Youtube.

Hearthstone seems to be a bit of a different beast. Despite the game running at 1920x1080, on a monitor that has a native resolution of 1920x1080p, and the base resolution in the Video settings being set to 1920x1080, there are always small pillarboxes in my local recordings. Here is a link to a Youtube video showing what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZueI_MSTagg.

I have scoured around previous posts on a number of different forums with very little success. I have tried a number of different settings combinations, from running HS in fullscreen, running it in windowed, using Game Capture as my OBS source, using Window Capture with a specified screen region (a region that supposedly matches the size of Heartstone running), adjusting the bitrate, attempting resolution downscaling. Nothing seems to work though!

Here is a log file of a local Hearthstone recording that exhibits the problem: 2015-07-23-1253-42.log

After trying for a week I can say with confidence that I am stumped. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank You,
THP

delete the game capture for HS and rebuild it. this time make sure that fit to screen is selected. you could do ignore aspect ratio but I dont think you'll need that. it might of been your game capture was built whiile your had your primary monitor set to your second screen. unsure. but if you view your recording on your second monitor, pillboxes will show up.

Ahaha this actually worked! Thanks a ton, you're a life saver. Although I feel like I have tried this previously, but I'm not even sure because of how many things I have tried at this point. I also am not sure how it was off to begin with, but I'm just glad its all back to better. Thank you kindly dping.
