Question / Help HD PVR2 Screen Tearing

I was wondering if anyone else here uses the HD PVR2 and the Window Capture workaround?

To be honest the quality is pretty good considering we are not able to capture directly, but one thing I have noticed is a lot of screen tearing which is not the case when direct screen capturing with XSplit.

Anyone got any tips to share on how to reduce/solve this?

Cheers.

Not sure why that would help really mate. This is apparently something that is a known issue - I just wanted to enquire as to what other users are doing to improve/resolve the problem.

Main issue is when capping a console game - since OBS does not support the HD PVR 2 (still).

Hi Grumbul,

Is there any screen tearing on the HDPVR2 player (essentially the source)? Or is it just in OBS?

A log would help to identify any configuration issues, such as a bad capture method or wrong framerate, that might cause screen tearing. I know others that don't seem to have this problem with the HD PVR 2, so I'm inclined to believe it's an issue with your settings, which a log would reveal.

Just another quick question :) (or two lol)

What game are you capturing (or it all games)

and

What software are you using to display the HDPVR2 - There is hauppage capture, Arcsoft something or other, or capture4me?

I also experience this screen tearing issue when trying to capture the Hauppauge HD PVR2 from Monitor capture (Can't figure out a way to use Software Capture instead) , using Hauppauge Capture utility.

Can you post a video example of the issue?

And can you as well post a log?

Yes Sir.

Video

The tearing is most noticeable in the middle of the screen.

I was using full screen monitor capture with Aero disabled, and using the "Hauppauge Capture" preview full screen.

It could be due to the fact that the game is running at 60fps and you are capturing at 48fps. I'm not sure how fast the Hauppauge can capture, but try 30fps and see if the tearing is still there.

At 720p the HDPVR2 can capture at 60fps :)

Ive been playing around with things today, and looked on the VOD and can't actually see any screen tearing?

Alright, I switched the program to Arcsoft Showbiz - Capture Module (Instead of Hauppauge Capture) and I'm using Window Capture in OBS with the options: Entire Window, and Capture Layered Windows, and it seems like the tearing has gone away.

Gameplay starts around 2hours30min.
New VOD.
Don't notice any tearing, but quality seems worse for some reason.

**Update**

Looks like the screen tearing is back. I can make it happen by spinning horizontally in game. It only appears when OBS is in "preview" or actually streaming, if none of those are active (Just sitting there with OBS open but not actually doing anything) than the tearing does not happen.

**UPDATE 2**

wow, I can see what you mean now.

Some things i would try/look into...

1) Minimise OBS When streaming - i'm not sure but with mine I minimise OBS to save my gcard from displaying something twice.

2) Load task manager and view the performance tab to see what % ur CPU is at when streaming

3) Try another free roam game to see if its in that as well.

Ok there is after 2 month even not a single solution for this tearing problem. I have the exact same problem with my Hauppauge Collosus Card. I tried many options but the tearing, after fast Video movment, is still there. Is there maybe some Options for Obs to Sync the Picture he captured, before he stream it. I can garrante that the problem come not from the ArcSoft ShowBiz.

One year and a half later, got the same problem with my PS4, HD PVR 2 and OBS v0.651 b (64bit). I'm recording in 1080p@60 fps. My CPU i5@3.3GHz, 8 GB RAM, Windows 7. My CPU load never gets over 60-70% while capturing. But I got a lot of tearing. See for yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5l-2nkM7Nuk. Capturing using "Hauppauge Capture" the video is fine. I made a screenshot out of the footage where you can see it very good. In the video at 44:33.
