Hello,

I would like to get an external hardware encoder via USB for ma laptop to stream.

Can someone recommend? AverMedia Live Gamer portable is a scam and you cannot use it as hardware encoder.

Right now, the only hardware encoder that OBS supports is Intel's QuickSync. It can't use AVerMedia encoders.

In OBS Advanced settings, check the "Use Quick Sync" box in the Video section. If it's greyed out, there might be some things you have to configure, but the Haswell chips shouldn't have too many issues in the way of getting it working.

Having said all that, the encoding quality is inferior to x264 and you will need more bitrate for equivalent quality x264 encoding.

It probably depends on licensing. I'm not certain if you can use encoders like AVerMedia's or NVENC without paying someone for it. If you are able to use it freely, it might still be a while before such support is added, but I believe it's something that would be added someday.

The NVENC apparently does not require a license anymore. But yeah, someone has to implement support for it, which takes time.
