GPU Usage Spike with Replay Buffer and HAGS Enabled on RTX 4070 Super

Hello, I’m experiencing a significant GPU usage spike when using the replay buffer feature with Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) enabled on my system with an NVIDIA RTX 4070 Super.

Issue details:

  • When OBS is minimized with replay buffer active, my GPU 3D usage spikes up to 90%, and even when idle it stays around 20%, which is unusually high.
  • Turning HAGS off reduces GPU usage to a normal 2-3% at idle.
  • Opening the OBS preview projector on my main monitor completely resolves the high GPU usage, bringing it down to ~3%, but unfortunately causes severe display glitches (cursor duplication and UI clutter) on the main monitor.
  • I have tried multiple NVIDIA drivers (including the latest Studio drivers) and different OBS versions, but the issue persists.
  • The problem only occurs when OBS is minimized, and replay buffer is active.
This seems like a possible conflict between Windows GPU scheduling, OBS replay buffer encoding, and NVIDIA GPU drivers.

Has anyone else encountered this, or are there known workarounds besides disabling HAGS? Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

The Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling ("HAGS") feature in Windows is currently known to cause performance and capture issues with OBS, games and overlay tools. It's an experimental feature and we recommend disabling it.
