Question / Help Good CPU + Bad GPU = Low Ingame FPS

My computer specs are:

i7 2600k
8gb ram
GTX 560ti connected at 1.1 x4 PCI-E port (my 2.0 x16 port isn't working)

Even when my x16 port was working, I never used 50% of my CPU on any game, but my GPU is always using 100%, now that I'm forced to use the 1.1 x4 port, it's even worse...


I was testing OBS to make a stream of Euro Truck Simulator 2 later today, but I noticed a huge drop on my FPS:
Ingame without OBS: 50~60fps
Ingame with OBS: 18~25fps
menu without OBS: 180~250fps
menu with OBS; 45~55fps


My screen is 1920x1080, but I'm downscaling it to 1280x720 on the OBS, I tried with 30, and 23fps, but there was no change at all ingame....

With the OBS on, ingame my CPU usage is about 20% each core, and the GPU usage is 100% all the time...

So...

Is there anyway to make OBS use more CPU and less GPU?

Lowering the general GPU usage is not really feasible I would say. You can maybe slightly lower it by using a low base resolution and no downscale at all. But it will still be used to copy over the images for example.
A big speed plus of OBS is gained by using the GPU for tasks its good for :)
I would probably recommend to lower the ingame graphics settings if possible, or simply trying playing the game on a lower resolution. For example just play it on 1280x720 and set obs to that size as well. Then you need no downscale and can test if you get better results.
Oh, and we always like to see log files, so we can pinpoint bottlenecks or false configurations :)

sadly you'll want to upgrade your gpu.
i'd also look into upgrading the motherboard or see if you can RMA it since the header isn't working.
go with at least the 600 series.

try these settings for obs
resolution 960x540, fps 25, kbps set 500kbps under your upload speed but not exceeding 2,500kbps

another issue is that euro truck sim has ZERO optimizing. so in short, its coded like crap and not much you'll be able to do with that game without a strong gpu.

I tried RMA, but I live in Brazil, and my motherboard in every country on the world have 3 years warranty, but in Brazil it have 1 year... and my PC is 2 and a half years old...

Next semester I'll buy a new MB, +8gb ram, and hopefully 800 series will be available, then I'll try to get a 860/860ti :)

if you plan to upgrade, i would just go full out on a new system
something like i7-4770k, msi mpower z97 motherboard, single 8gb sick (so you can upgrade and max out the board if need be), 800 series or equivalent amd card, seasonic 650-750w psu, and h100i closed loop liquid cooler.

would be able to run some sick settings with that setup. people would feel like they were playing the game themselves. :D

then you can use the current computer for your daily machine. this way if it gets a virus your streaming doesn't take a hit.
good for us power users that install or download questionable things ;)

If youre gonna upgrade your GPU you will also want to get a new motherboard. Running a graphics card in a 4X port is going to make it slow like a snail.
