Get screen to record

Hi guys.

Bit of an issue that I'm struggling with. Pretty new to OBS so please bear with me.
So I want to have a live view from my webcam with a cropped part of a different software (that's running in the background overlayed on top of it). I've done this before about a year or so ago but being stupid I uninstalled OBS and have now completely forgotten how to do this.

Tried 'screen capture', 'display capture' and 'window capture' but it just doesn't want to show the software that I would like to crop. Been on loads of different websites and tried all the fixes but still nothing. Really frustrating, as like I said I've done this before!

Is there any particular plugin that could help or is it me just being completely stupid?

Sorry, I'm not great at explaining things in writing lol

Any help would be appreciated.

I think I kind of get what you're saying,

I feel the issue may be that you want to capture the window of the software that's running in the background. Knowing a little more about this would be good. Is the window for that software simply sitting behind the other window, is it truly a background process, or something else?

I may be wrong- but I seem to remember any sort of window capture works best if the window you are trying to capture is actually visible on a screen. (I welcome my OBS elders correcting me if I'm wrong here. After all, we're out to help people!)

If I am right, your best bet might be to have these windows next to one another on your screen. You may have to make them a little smaller to fit together- then expand them out a bit in OBS, which would mean slight resolution loss. I hope this works- though It would obviously be ideal if I am wrong, and there's a better way.
