Question / Help Game runs fine but OBS has FPS drop

Hi everyone.

I just had this issue when livestreaming ARK: while I saw the game running smooth and nice on my pc, I noticed that on the OBS windows says that the FPS where dropping, instead of being a 30 FPS constant it even drop to 9 FPS, so my viewers were watching a 10 FPS gameplay while I was playing it perfectly.

Here it's my pc:
  • Thermaltake 600 W
  • Motherboard ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0
  • AMD FX-8320 Black Edition 3.50 GHz
  • HyperX Fury 16 GB 1866 MHz (8x2)
  • AMD Radeon R7 260X 2 GB GDDR5
  • HDD 2 TB WD Purple
  • Windows 10 Home 64 bit

Here I give you the log files, the 1st one it's the first attemp of live streaming and the 2nd one was the result of upgrading the gpu drivers to the latest version (16.3.2 Radeon Software Edition, before I had the 16.1 version), which didn't help.

1st log: http://pastebin.com/Waai7Va6

2nd log: http://pastebin.com/G3Cy0zP8

Here you have an example: https://www.twitch.tv/ivy_cat/v/57327873#

P.S: I didn't use to have this problem before, like, the last time I did a livestream of ARK was on 16th of March and all worked perfectly, here I give you the log, maybe something changed but I din't upgrade or touch anything.

16th of march log: http://pastebin.com/seRgdsQD
And here you can see the recording, everything was fine: https://www.twitch.tv/ivy_cat/v/54692474#

Thanks!

Only things I've noticed is that your bitrate is a bit low for the resolution you're trying to stream at, especially with a first-person game. Dropping to a 480p downscale might improve the pixelation issues.

As far as the framedrops, I can't tell how much of that is the game; if you watch your webcam, even during heavy stuttering the cam stays smooth. Have you tried removing the Monitor Capture, and running with a Game Capture instead?

Oh, and what could be the resolution for 480p?

And when the OBS is livestreaming at 10 fps while the game is running perfectly fine, the web cam also has fps drop, so it's like a "global" thing at those moments.

I've tried by all ways to do a game capture of ARK but for some reason it only displays a black rectangle, that's why i'm using monitor capture but it was working perfectly fine until the last time i tried to go live :-/

I'm using the default OBS Classic 0.657

Use the downscale dropdown box. The second number is the progressive scan (p) rating (so 1920x1080 would be 1080p). Pick whichever one is below 480.

Have you enabled the anti-cheat compatibility checkbox on the Game Capture? IIRC ARK does run anticheat, no idea if they've whitelisted OBS on the latest patches.

Hmm. From your VOD, I saw several points where the game slowed to a crawl, but the webcam appeared to continue on smoothly. Why it appeared to be a game or capture issue, rather than an encoding issue. You're also dropping/duping less than 1% of frames on average.

Oh, nice, i'm gonna search for that anti-cheat option and try again to do the game capture :D

I'll be posting the results soon :)

So, thanks to your advice on the anti-cheating option, i was finally able to game capture ARK instead of using monitor capture. I'm just playing with the preview on OBS enabled and the FPS remain constantly on 30, so i guess that the game capture thing helped a lot :)

Now i'll just have to try it on livestream :-)
