Question / Help Game Echo in recordings/stream

OK, so I am experimenting with streaming on a gaming laptop with an i7 8750H CPU and a GTX 1070 and when I capture the game video and audio (with the mic disabled) it sounds fine, but as soon as I enable the microphone the game audio will echo. I have a feeling it has to do with the onboard audio solution and unfortunately it doesn't have enough editable options to help troubleshoot this problem.

I have ordered a USB sound card to see if that will resolve the issue.

If you play the game audio through speakers, this will probably be picked up by your microphone. So you have your game audio twice: one original and one echoed acoustically through your mic.
To avoid picking up any unwanted sound by your mic, make sure any sound from your computer is only played back through headphones and nothing through speakers.
And put the mic as near to your mouth as possible, so you can lower the mic volume as much as possible, so environmental noises are as much suppressed as possible. But don't put the mic too near to and directly in front of your mouth to avoid the mic picking up your breath noises. 5-10 cm is a good distance.

Well, i am using a headset and as soon as I turn on the mic it causes the game sound to echo. If the mic is disabled then the t ame sound is fine.

In that case, it sounds like your mic picks up the audio from your headphones, some sort of signal crossover

It's definitely not any audio leakage from bad padding on the headset because I used the same headset on a different PC and this didn't occur.

Is the jack a TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) jack? Also known as a Headphone/Mic combo jack.

EDIT. Is your default recording device set to stereo mix?

Yes and that's the only sort of audio connection i have.

no it's not set to stereo mix.

Below is what I get from the mic (even though I have the in-line mute turned on). I don't think the jack type should be the issue TBH but I did get a USB sound card to see if that would make any difference.
