Question / Help Game audio recorded through mic and headphones

I have had the same PC setup for 2 years but a few days ago I noticed what I thought was an echo in my game recording. It turns out OBS was recording game audio from both my headset and mic with a very small delay so it sounds like an echo. I am using a set of Triton AX Pro headphones with a built in 3.5 mm detachable mic. The headphones go through an amp then into my PC with an optical cable and the mic is going to the PC through USB. I have looked all over the internet and haven't found a successful fix for this yet. I have "listen to this device" unchecked, made sure the headphones are the only output, went through the realtek options all with no luck. Any ideas?

If you mute your headset's audio, does the echo go away? if so, your loopback is physical. your mic is picking up the audio from your headset, which is somewhat common since your mic is right there.

When I mute my mic it shuts the mic totally off but I have tried turning the volume down and covering the mic and it still picks it up. I have pretty think ear cups and even on low volume it still picks it up and it's the same volume as the game audio.

are you muting it on the inline mute or windows? try the inline mute and test, then try leaving it upmuted and mute the headset audio.

either way, it sounds like an issue with the headset somewhere there is a lookback.

my closed cup headsets have a loopback from my mic so I can hear myself but the circuit is isolated to just the headphone so my mic doesn't pick it up at all.

When I mute the mic with the inline control thing it shuts it off so no audio playback that way but when I leave the mic on and mute the headphone audio it still plays through the mic? This is weird since it started out of no where without me changing anything. So frustrating, I really don't want to buy a new headset but it might come down to that. Mine is kinda old anyway and the "7.1" surround is really bad so maybe it's time

If you have another simple headset/mic to test with that would be best to make sure this is what it is, but its what I can assume based on what you are telling me.
