When will we be able to use these modern, Free codecs together to livestream video using OBS (Open Broadcast Studio)?

What work needs to be accomplished for it to happen?
What are the main obstacles at the moment?

Hardware for media streaming using AV1 is already available and hopefully we shall be able to make use of that with OBS soon.

AV1 is already implemented into OBS. but their are 2 requirements to use it. a Supported GPU and a Supported platform. Youtube is setup and ready to accept AV1 encoding. for twitch, rumor has it, they plan to announce something related to AV1 in Jan 2024.

Automatic Stream Configuration

A server-side algorithm then returns the best possible configuration for OBS Studio that optimizes the viewer experience given constraints in your setup. We plan to use automatic stream configuration to experiment with higher bitrates (better quality), 1440p60/4k60p streaming, and new codecs like HEVC/AV1 in the future.

AV1

AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) is an open, royalty-free video codec designed for live streaming. AV1 is one of the newest codecs in the video ecosystem and offers better quality compared to other codecs such as AVC and HEVC. We’re working on experimenting with AV1 support to be powered by multiple client-side encodes. Initially, this will be exclusively available to NVIDIA RTX 40xx GPUs.
