Question / Help Fullscreen capture (hotkey) does not work most of the time

I'm trying to capture Fallout 4 using game capture because monitor capture is not performant enough to maintain a good capture frame rate, but most of the time it's not working. I just get a black screen. Occasionally it works correctly though.

The log contains a lot of
Code:
13:17:26.155: [game-capture: 'Capture Hotkey'] Activate hotkey pressed
13:17:26.661: [game-capture: 'Capture Foreground'] attempting to hook fullscreen process: Fallout4.exe
13:17:26.695: [game-capture: 'Capture Foreground'] capture stopped
13:18:54.095: [game-capture: 'Capture Foreground'] attempting to hook fullscreen process: Fallout4.exe
13:18:54.128: [game-capture: 'Capture Foreground'] capture stopped
13:18:56.128: [game-capture: 'Capture Foreground'] attempting to hook fullscreen process: Fallout4.exe
13:18:56.162: [game-capture: 'Capture Foreground'] capture stopped

Some help making this work reliably would be great.

Test in a new scene collection with a single game capture source. I suspect two or more game capture sources out of the giant pile you're using in the current scene collection are conflicting.

Hm, I think you're right, I removed the Fallout 4 specific scene and now the generic hotkey capture source seems to lock on correctly. Thanks!

Though two sources conflicting seems like something that shouldn't be able to happen... I'd expect it to prioritize the active scene.

You should probably use a single game capture source across all scenes if you can (use the "Add existing" option after creating it). They aren't prioritized.

It keeps happening. I have a single "game capture" source now. It's still incredibly unreliable.

It seems if I start the game in question, press the shortcut, then tab out and ignore it for an undetermined amount of time, then focus on the game again it successfully locks on...

Edit: Maybe not. Didn't work with the second game. Couldn't get it to lock on at all.

Tried in a profile with just a single game capture source. Same issue.

Try running OBS as admin, make sure it isn't running on the 1280x1024 display attached to the iGPU and isn't trying to capture something on that same display.

Running as admin makes no difference. I've already tried that. It's not running on the iGPU display because that's next to my bed. I don't have anything on that other than a chrome window for watching YouTube from my bed.

I think it has to do with windowed mode. I tend to play most things in borderless windowed mode, especially when streaming, because I like to control other things outside of the game a lot. It seems OBS locks on reliably on games in fullscreen, but is quite unreliable for things in windowed or borderless windowed mode.

Or not.

Setting Elite: Dangerous to fullscreen mode worked once. Today it's not working. OBS is once more just refusing to lock on.

And yes, I tried running as administrator.
