Bug Report FULL STOP - computer locks up using OBS on any game.

As the title mentions, when I use OBS to stream, my computer locks up and doesn't respond requiring a hard reboot. It's decent software, but it would be nice if it worked for me.

Honestly that's kind of an underpowered computer for streaming. A dual core 2.4 GHz CPU and a 9800GT are really not that great for the kind of processing you need to do real-time video encoding.

What x264 preset are you using, and what capture method? Do you think you could post your log? http://obsproject.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=97

Quad core ( 4 CPUs ). I usually have it set to 3GHz, but have been running at 2.4 for quite some time. It can play pretty much any game I want on the highest settings, and is responsive enough to use as a coding machine with two monitors with games and other things running. Other quads I've seen haven't faired as well, and definitely dual-core wouldn't be enough for what I do.

Oh my mistake, I misread and thought it was a dual core. It's still very underpowered, though, for real-time video encoding. Your logs are showing tons of lagged frames from overworking your system. Try downscaling to 480p and using the superfast or ultrafast x264 presets.

And I would probably not recommend using game capture with that GPU...it's pretty slow, and I've seen it work poorly for others. Try just Window capture instead with Aero enabled.

Well, streaming is an entirely different animal. 1080p is far too much for that CPU (I used to have a q6600 at 3.5ghz and it couldn't even properly handle 720p for instance). Did you happen to mark down the BSOD error that id spit out? You can also check the Event Viewer in Windows (Windows Logs > System)

There was no BSoD, just a full stop. Non-responsive. I'll try down-grading to 480p as you suggested and report back :-)

I finally figured out what caused it; and what may cause other users to have the same problem. Basically since I've had this computer with Asus P5k, Q6600, etc.. when I try to transfer data over network; It'd Freeze; no input accepted on keyboard and mouse would lockup. Same with OBS and a few other applications.

I'd suggest adding this information to the help / faq / documentation... Or if the program closed unnaturally, next open ask a few questions such as "Did your pc lock up, did it freeze", etc.. and make the suggestion. It seems to be an issue with Asus P5K boards, but may affect other Asus boards, or others too. It took a long time to finally figure it out just because I didn't use the networking feature ( to other pcs on local net, or streaming ) as often as I do now, which is why I finally went out to find the solution.

It may help others, so instead of people blaming the program, this solution should be somewhere, because it isn't the programs fault. OBS Is the best recording software I've found anywhere... It doesn't have issues like all of the others, isn't resource intensive, it creates beautiful videos, allows to record both mic and speakers without limiting time or whatever, etc...

The only feature I'd request is the ability to record microphone and speaker with a quick-start button, and to an audio only format, or the ability to split video from audio in two files ( this would help people simplify a step in terms of using one audio source and multiple videos of different angles )

I'll post the suggestion in the appropriate spot, but This can be locked / marked solved, I just wanted to argue the point regarding the lockup issue being added to some form of documentation with the potential ability to implement the crash detection form to help people find the answer before blaming the software prematurely.

I have an Asus Z97-A Motherboard, and I'm getting the same issue in Windows 8.1. I've exhausted many other options including faulty hardware and checking drivers. None of these have yielded any results, which leads me to believe that this might be a solution. I've also encountered this problem with other streaming software.

However, I'm confused as to what I'm supposed to do with this information. Where are these menus that you are referencing? A more in-depth solution (maybe even with screenshots) would be very helpful. Thanks!

I have no idea when you responded to this thread ( data is hidden ).

The "fix" file shows what data the network adapter advanced preference options should be set to... at least which options I'm using to correct the issue. One or two were all I had to change.

A simple way to test if this is your issue is if you have more than one pc on your local network, try to transfer a large file ( 100MB to 1GB ) to the other pc from yours ( or to the other from the other ). If you lock up, then it is the issue. Mind you that this didn't happen all the time, I could transfer small files at points but most of the time it reliably locked up during network data transfer and streaming...

My board is ASUS P5K and I haven't had any issues since applying this fix and I can stream or record to my hard-drive with no lag ( I love OBS ) unlike with other applications ( FRAPS for example lags and creates a huge file ).

So, the way you apply the fix is this Windows 8.1 ( I'm about to switch to 10 on the second pc ) >>

> Control Panel
> Network and Sharing Center
> Right side will show "Connections: XXXXX" which lists all adapters.. You'll want to click on "Ethernet" if you use the onboard wired connection. If you use wireless, I'm not sure if this will work for you, but it is work a shot ( keep a record of the original values )

Unfortunately it doesn't appear when each reply was, but the member was last active in Feb 2015 so it must be less than 11 months or so old. I had the issue for years before finding a solution, so it's possible the previous member also has the issue if they didn't figure out the original text fix.


Here, under the user account then postings; why is it so difficult to find reply date???

Ah, nice... I'll have to inject some CSS to set it visible all the time; no idea why it'd be hidden, it isn't exactly a "Clean-ui" style and hiding important information until a user actively seeks it out seems bleh.
