Question / Help FPS problem - CPU/GPU is not maxed out

Even though my CPU and GPU are not maxed out, I still get FPS drops in-game. I've had the same problem with several versions of OBS, every time an update hasn't changed anything. I've been searching over the last few months but I haven't seen a thread about anyone else having this problem.

I can't get a stable 60 FPS with any modern game with OBS but when I use Fraps I do get 60 stable. I've been using just the file output to test higher quality and it doesn't seem to affect the FPS much. The very frequent drops are terrible but they are very noticeable and I see no reason why they occur. I can actually increase the quality by changing the encoding preset and my cores will not be maxed out at any point but the problem still exists. I also tried the 64bit exe after I noticed it last night, but same thing happens. I also get no frame drops with file outputs when I don't play a game.

Also, I see streams with crystal clear quality but every guide suggests 3000/3000 or 5000/5000 which is awful. What sort of upload does one need for a clear 1080 at 30 and 60 FPS?

Don't use Monitor Capture, it's the slowest capture method on Vista/7. Use Window Capture with Aero Enabled, or Game Capture.

Thanks for the reply. Same thing happens while I use Window Capture/Game Capture though. It is much more common with Monitor Capture...even though I'm using way less resources.

I'm guessing this is the problem though. It doesn't happen with lower framerates (stable), I'm guessing this is normal or there is some specific setting outside of OBS which I need to change. It looked really weird judging that my GPU is at ~66%, my CPU cores not going anywhere near 100% and having heard you can stream with an i5.

It's because you're trying to stream at 1080p60, which is hard on your system and hard of viewers' systems to watch. It's generally a bad idea to try to stream 1080p60 at all. You should downscale by at least 1.25 if you want to do 60fps, and if you want to do 1080p, don't bother going above 30fps. Especially on the faster preset...

Also, don't use more than 3500 bit rate on Twitch. They don't like you going above that.

well 1080@60 isnt a real problem with that cpu even with faster preset but the bitrate is really way too high

but then again theres no real point for 1080@60 because the flash player puts so much strain on your viewers cpu that they need at least an quad core to not have any problems with watching you.

also your gpu is falling behind if you stream at those settings

you should go for 1280x720@60 and be fine with fast preset and 2500 bitrate will solve all your problems and makes your stream accessible by more viewers with bad internet

I have a 3770k and I have issues streaming 1080p60 on CPU-heavy games (OP hasn't stated what he streams, just that they are modern). An i7 isn't a silver bullet.

I'm new to streaming actually, my upload currently isn't good enough to stream at good quality so until them I'm just preparing. I've been testing mostly with League of Legends and Rise of the Triad on highest settings, base resolution 1080.

Question, can I only use 30 or 60 FPS to stream or can I use something in-between?

thers 30/48/60 which are the most common fps settings but as i suggested 720@60 with fast preset, cbr and 2500bitrate should be really good in all games.


and dodgepong thats weird... got i7 2700k @ 4,5 and i streamed css/csgo/bioshock/mw3/bf3 and some others games with 1080@60 but on veryfast preset obviously the quality is bad for high motion games at this quality point but i had no problems but then again i forced my viewers to have pretty damn good pc's to watch a stream which would be actually better in 720@60 in this case :P

Encoding isn't necessarily the problem, it's the playback. Either way, the system and bandwith requirements for 1080p60fps at decent quality are, IMO, completely impractical and highly unnecessary for a high quality stream.
