First-time user needs help with screen capture

Happy New year to you all.

I wish to do a simple screen capture on my Windows 11 computer.

I have studied the settings in some detail and I an reasonable happy with the ones I have.

I have done dummy run and I get a recording of perfectly acceptable quality.

My problem is this. I first open OBS and make sure it is set up OK but not recording. I then go to my computer and set the sequence I wish to screen capture with display in full-screen mode - just as I wish it to be captured.

How do I now get back to the OBS page to start the capture?

Should I first set-up OBS to start the capture, then set-up the required sequence on the computer and just accept that there will be unwanted footage at the beginning?

You have several options. The most easy is to move the OBS window to a secondary monitor you don't intend to record. This requires a second monitor connected, of course.
The next option is what you wrote in your last paragraph.
The third option is to minimize OBS and activate the OBS icon in the system tray (I don't remember, minimize to system tray is probably already default. If not, activate it in settings->general). Then right-click the system tray icon and start recording from its menu. You can see the recording state by a small red dot in the system tray icon.
And can use hotkeys. Go to settings->Hotkeys and assign some hotkey to the start/stop recording function. You can assign the same hotkey to start and to stop recording, so you toggle recording by pressing the hotkey.
