Failed to start recording

We are running OBS 30.2.2. It has been working fine for us, until we suddenly received the attached error message, also reproduced here:
Failed to start recording
init_cuda_ctx:CUDA call "cu->cuDeviceGet(&device,gpu)" failed with CUDA_ERROR_INVALID_DEVICE(101): invalid device ordinal

We cannot figure out what the issue is and need help with it. Is this indicating a hardware failure of some sort?

Check your NVENC settings aren't setting an invalid "GPU" value.
