Question / Help eXtensible Host Controller

A friend of mine is interested in using a spare PC as secondary streaming and is considering the XCAPTURE-1 or the Avermedia extreme cap u3. The thing is, his USB 3.0 ports are not shown as being "eXtensible",

If his PC will not allow these units to capture the display correctly, is it possible to purchase an PCIe card such as this ? Or is the eXtensible host, be it renesas or intel only built into the motherboard, for instance? (basically this adapter only providing an additional 3.0 non extensible ports.) Thanks

I've never seen built-in Renesas USB controllers, they have always been on PCI Express expansion cards.

The ASMedia ports will indeed not work and might cause the device drivers to bluescreen, he will have to get an expansion card with a Renesas controller, and then he also has to be aware that he will most likely only be able to use one port (for the XCAPTURE-1 or U3) to ensure that there's enough bandwidth available for 1080p60.

The expansion card you linked is a model SD-PEX20137, which is known to work with devices such as the XCAPTURE-1 and Extremecap U3.

Thanks, i'll report back w/ more info.

They actually are extensible. That's what XHCI means - eXtensible Host Controller Interface. However, they are not Intel or Renesas host controllers, which is what matters. As paibox said, ASMedia interfaces will not work.

So as you guys said, simply attempting the asmedia interface did not work. When combining the xcapture and monitor receive a display, the video capture was simply blank.

He ended up purchasing the expansion card above, installing it in a pci-e 2.0 slot, installed latest website drivers however the device did not show as being a Renesas controller. I let him borrow my xcapture-1 unit for testing purposes and the same exact thing, no video display - just a black screen when attempting to add video device n OBS.

The description of the device claims to be "Compliant with Intel's Extensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) Specification Revision 1.0". Which is probably true, in the case that there already IS a Intel/Renesas XHCI device implemented within the motherboard. (I could be wrong, though.) Unfortunately his does not already have one.

I'm sorry, but it's always hard to provide help when the help is being relayed through another person.

I can tell you this much: The expansion card looks identical to cards that are known to work with USB 3.0 capture devices like the XCAPTURE-1. Please ask your friend to check his motherboard manual, so that he has actually connected it to a PCI Express 2.0 slot.

While a motherboard may claim to (an correctly do so) to have PCI Express 2.0 support, that does not indicate for certain that all ports on the motherboard are PCI Express 2.0. For instance, my motherboard has two PCI Express 3.0 ports, while the others are 2.0. He will need to make SURE that he has it connected to a 2.0 port, as 1.0 does not support the bandwidth necessary.

Please note that PCI Express 2.0 is not the same as a x2 slot. The expansion card is 1x, but it requires 2.0.

Sorry to bring this thread back up, but it seems like that device needs to have a power supply connected (4 pin)

Know any alternative USB 3.0 cards at a decent price that don't have this requirement and a similar chipset? I don't want to have to screw around with cables.

The XCAPTURE-1 does not have a separate power supply connector, it is powered over USB. I don't know who told you it needs a power supply, but I do know that you shouldn't listen to them.

You alternatives are the BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle (which is finicky to work with and doesn't support 1080p, but it does have really neat passthrough) and the AverMedia ExtremeCap U3 (which I don't know much about, only has one input and no passthrough at all).

Edit: Also let it be noted that both the Intensity Shuttle and the U3 require the same kind of bandwidth from the USB 3.0 port as the XCAPTURE-1 does.

Oh no, not the capture device, I mean the USB card that you have to install.

The one the OP linked has to be connected to the computer's power supply to detect devices (according to what I read.)
(Put in computer, then hook up to power supply)

The U3 is actually a pretty good device, In fact I would recommend it to anyone who would happen to have the supported USB 3.0 chipsets installed in their computer.

The U3 can also have passthrough if you can do a little workaround via a monitor of your choice (A splitter)

... Using a splitter does not mean that the device has passthrough. If you do not have a spare 4-pin molex connector then no, the USB expansion card won't work properly.

I'm sorry, but all USB 3.0 devices will require something like this. Some will have workarounds, like the U3 disables certain resolutions if your USB port doesn't have enough bandwidth I think. The XCAPTURE-1 and Intensity Shuttle will just flat out not work, or bluescreen your computer. If you don't have the capabilities for something, and you don't have a free molex connector to provide it, you'll just have to stick to the U3.

Thanks, that was pretty clear, makes sense.

What motherbaord model does your friend have?

P.S: I have a Z87 Extreme 9/AC, and it has 8 USB 3.0 ports. Only 2 are Intel ports, the rest are ASMedia controller. My Xcapture-1 is plugged into the intel ports of course and works flawlessly.
