Question / Help ElGato sound issues

I've looked around the forums, and I haven't found any threads addressing my issue. I am running an ElGato capture card on my PC; I use it to record videos of gameplay all the time, but when I try to run it through OBS with the video capture option, I don't get sound for some reason. Right now the solution I'm using is to open the capture card software and full screen the video, capturing the monitor, but as a result, the video chunks a little. I can't figure out why I get sound through one method and not the other; any suggestions? Thank you very much!

One method and not the other? What other method did you use?

On the right, in the device source properties, there are a number of options for audio output. Should be stuff like "audio device", with three radio buttons "no audio", "output to desktop", and "output to stream only". You need to select "output to stream only", and select the "(use audio from device)" or whatever the name is in the audio device drop down.

Strangely, the video dropped out when I tried those settings; I have the res set at 720x480 right now. Do you think a lower res would help?

The alternate method I was referring to is doing a monitor capture with the card opened and full screened; I get lagless sound when I do that, but it doesn't always sync up with the video.

Update* I got the sound working very briefly, but it cut out after a few moments. I haven't been able to replicate it since. The video capture card I'm using is Elgato, but it isn't the HD capture card. I'm using the older AV model found here http://www.elgato.com/video/video-capture
