Question / Help Elgato or Video Card or Computer?

Hi all,

I had a Mac Pro 5,1 that I installed Windows in order to stream. The specs are as follows:

"Quad Core" Xeon 2.8 with Windows 10 installed
12 GB DDR
Radeon HD 5770
256 SSD + 1 TB HDD
Elgato Game Capture HD 60

I noticed that the quality of my recordings and streams were alright but not necessarily great. Anyway, I played around in the settings and wanted to see if my computer could handle 720p60fps. Well that was a fail. The video would be unwatchable. I guess my question is this. Is it my video card or the elgato or the whole computer itself? Ideally it would be either the elgato or video card - I don't really want to replace the whole computer :).

To be quite honest I find streaming software to work smoother on my MBP when I use it to record my PC than my desktop PC recording my Xbox even with the Intel graphics and not my EVGA.
There's just not as much customization yet.

When you're recording/streaming open up a task manager and see the the usage of the CPU is at.
It sounds like you may have a GPU issue if your CPU is running okay while you're trying to record which is odd to me considering I record just fine on an i7 2.8 ghz MBP with built in graphics.


My gaming desktops specs aren't as good

i3 3220 3.3ghz
12gb ram
1tb HDD
EVGA GFX
ElGatoHD60

I can record fine 1080p FPS.


1. Check the CPU while you try recording with a task manager
2. Check for a Direct-X update you said you just installed Windows correct?
3. Try reverting back to the OSX there may perhaps be a comparability issue there

It's an older, weaker xeon.

Harold, so you think this is more of a CPU issue rather than a GPU issue? I guess at the end of the day, I am trying to maintain this Mac Pro. I'm wondering if I could upgrade the CPU. I've seen it on other forums.

I can't see it being a CPU problem if while running OBS itself trying to record you're not experiencing system lag.
Your CPU should be able to handle these processes just fine, could you confirm which version the CPU is.

I.E

I have an i3 3220 3.3 Ghz

But essentially the Xeon is equivalent to the i7 for what you're using it for. (Even the i7 3770k would be fine)
Any decent processor should be able to record gameplay, even the FX 8350 can handle it.

To test out the waters and see if it is your ElGatoHD60, make sure you have the Game Capture HD Software downloaded of ElGatos website.
Start the program and try recording some gameplay.

Also be sure you're running the 32 bit version of OBS as I can't get my ElGato to work with the 64 bit version.




I really don't think it's the CPU as I stated, I have an i3 from the same period and iI lose nothing on recording 1080p@60FPS

I'm definitely going to check it out. I think I was using the 64bit so that might be a problem. I'm gonna try it out and let you know. Thanks for your help!

So I had a chance to play around with the setting a bit more and used the 32 bit OBS. I was able to record videos with at 1280*720 60FPS but it was grainy. I wanted to try something out so I installed Windows on my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro with an i5 and Intel Integrated Graphics. OBS ran perfectly and the videos were great and much better quality. I think I may have to consider replacing my computer in the near future. I guess the ole Xeon processors are a bit old and weak.
