i don't really know why but when ever i finish recording a video using obs (recording games) i try to edit the videos using either vegas pro or windows movie maker but the only thing that allows to be edited is the audio as the video doesn't appear. At first i thought i just forgot to record the screen and i only recorded the sound but when i checked in the folders i was able to fully watch my video with both the audio and video. sorry if it doesn't make sense, i'm trying my best at the moment to make it understandable. i'm just not sure what to do. can somebody help please?

If its an old version of Vegas it might not be compatible with mp4 files or relies on Apple Quicktime.
Other older Software like Premiere Pro CS2 (which also interprets mp4 as audio only) can be tricket to support these files by simply renaiming it from .mp4 to .mov.

The Windows Movie Maker cannot edit .mp4 files.

ah right, yeah my vegas pro is 8.0. so all i need to do is update it then.
I don't have premiere pro CS2 (i never actually heard of it) but if it can help edit videos if i change the file name to .mov and is easy to use and understand i might try and get it if i can.
as for windows movie maker, i just have to cross that off the list as it was my main editing software for the videos i used to make.

thank you for giving me the information, i'm more at ease now.

(editing:) never mind on updating Vegas pro, apparently it's a cracked version so i cannot update it.

The only more complex video editor for free I know that supports mp4 is Lightworks.
Sometimes Amazon.com sells video editing software rather cheap.
For example right now the download version of Corel VideoStudio Pro X7 for 20$.

I think it has something to do with your fps and size of the mp4. I found a low quality mp4 file on my computer I could open but my obs mp4 file could not however.

Any further thoughts on this?

EDIT:

I have caused myself a world of pain today to get this to work, but I just did something to my that just worked...

Your old files will be lost. Unless you convert them.

Go to 'Broadcast Settings' > File Path 'C:\Folder Name\Filename_.mp4' (I.E. 'F:\Obs rec\OBS_.mp4' which is my case).

Now. When you 'RIGHT CLICK' this new Video File, go to 'Properties' and you will now see this:

obsmp4s.png

It looks like just before, but it should work at least.

Please try and confirm this. I will not change a thing now.
