trying to use OBS to import dvd files from external dvd player. not working. ideas?

OBS isn't the right tool for this. Use some dedicated CD/DVD reading/ripping tool to directly copy the digital data without playing back and capturing again and without the quality deterioration connected with that. You need an internal DVD drive within your computer or an external DVD drive connected with USB. They're dirt cheap, about 20 Euro.
