Question / Help Does Window Capture work better on Windows 8.1 vs Windows 7 (with aero disabled)?

I have W7 and I've been streaming with OBS window capture on the elgato software lately. With Windows theme set to 'basic' mode (Aero turned off) it's pretty smooth. But W7 has been annoying me lately with some issues and I'm thinking about upgrading to 8.1. I already tried Windows 10 but went back to 7 after a day. Never had Windows 8 though.

Window capture in Windows 7 with Aero disabled performs horribly; I think the only way you could get worse performance is by using monitor capture. Aero can't be disabled in Windows 8+, which is fine, because you don't need to do that anyway. You should also be adding your Elgato as a video capture source, not window capturing its software.

Also if you didn't like Windows 10 I can't imagine how you could like Windows 8.

In short, Window Capture works a lot better under Win7 with Aero on.

The only reason to turn off Aero under W7 is if you're forced to use a Monitor Capture, as a very last resort (such as if you can't just use a game capture of the DWM process to grab your primary monitor).

Seconded. If you didn't like Win10, Win8(.1) is going to be even worse.

Actually, the method I use is significantly better than using the Elgato directly. Because you can't use flashback recording in OBS. Being able to stream, record, rewind and screenshot without any quality loss is the best of both worlds. It's like having one of the newer Elgatos when I only have the old one.

Not on my system. For some reason, OBS can't window capture the video in Elgato's software with aero turned on. It can with Aero turned off though.

it wasn't made to do this. Aero enabled for using the elgato with the video capture device source not windo capturing the elgato software.

What would you guys say works better. Windows Capture in Windows 7 or Monitor Capture in Windows 8.1? Doesn't Monitor Capture use more resources or does Windows 8 make it that easy for OBS?

Monitor capture works quite well in Windows 8 and 10, it was only terrible in Vista and 7.

One last question. Can anyone tell me why when I turn aero on, Window Capture can't capture the 'video' in Elgato's software? You can see the app but not the actual video. It's either black or has that 'mirror' effect I don't really know the name of.

In short it wasn't meant to be done that way. I dont know what more there is to say.

That doesn't really say anything besides don't think outside the box. I just want to know if there's a technical reason why Window Capture can't capture a video overlay. Or if there's a setting that needs to me adjusted.

No settings, aero is a display manager between the game and the display put shortly, OBS uses aero to grab the windows and/or game capture. unfortunately scenes like the elgato window aren't designed to be captured like you are doing inside an aero envoronment. tbh, I dont think I realized it worked with aero disabled but that makes a little sense now. its been forever since I've used win7 with aero disabled.

I haven't been using Windows 7 without aero either until I discovered this method of streaming. It's almost flawless except for the fact that disabling aero turns off vsync globally. And for some reason, Elgato's software acts up when you want to save a recording while aero is turned off.
