Question / Help Desktop Capture extremely choppy on Windows 7

So desktop capture works perfectly on Windows 10 and its a perfectly smooth 60fps but in windows 7 it doesn't keep a steady frame rate in OBS and drops and raises to random frame rates. In the end it looks extremely bad and I cannot use it for Desktop capture right now.

Any reason why this may be?

I'm using the same settings in OBS Studio on the same computer but with Windows 7 instead of Windows 10. Desktop capture doesn't work yet everything else does and it confuses me.

I may be wrong, so someone more familiar with display capture can correct me if needed...

As far as I know, display capture on Windows 7 uses a different mechanism than display capture on Windows 8+. This is, if I recall correctly, partially due to different graphics backends for each OS. This article for OBS Classic might still be relevant for this particular case. You might be able to get better display capture performance on Windows 7 by disabling Aero, but again, I'm not intimately familiar with OBS on Windows 7 or the graphics subsystems.

On Win7 its recommended to disable aero to achieve the best result with monitor capture, but since its performance is really bad on Win7 I would suggest using Window Capture whenever possible or Game Capture.

The reason I downgraded to Windows 7 is because of performance. I find that games perform a lot better while streaming on Windows 7. Desktop capture however would be appreciated so I won't have to show a choppy capture of my desktop. But I guess if it doesn't work I'll try using OBS Classic when I get home. Its mainly for tutorials and recording. I always use Game Capture to record/stream games.

I'd normally use Nvidia Shadow play for desktop recording but desktop capture apparently doesn't work for me on Win7.

I guess sacrifices must be made for now for an overall better experience.

But I'll definitely try OBS Classic. I didn't think of that.

Disable Aero and it will work. Desktop capture works also with shadowplay. Look in its options and watch out for a privacy control.

Classic won't make display capture perform any better, and will put you in an unsupported state.

I didn't mean that you should use OBS Classic. I was merely using the article about the efficiency of different capture methods as a reference to explain why display capture on Windows 7 had bad performance versus Windows 10 where it works fine. As @Harold says above, OBS Classic is now unsupported, and you will be less likely to be able to receive assistance if any issues arise while using OBS Classic.

If you absolutely must use Display Capture, disabling Aero should improve performance.

I use windows 7, and with aero enabled it is around 30fps, without aero it works full 60fps.
Just disable aero and it will work.
