desktop audio won't record without sound on

I'm trying to make a video where I make a song without hearing it, but if I don't have my sound on it doesn't detect desktop audio. is there a way to fix that?

Suggest you look into VBl Audio Cables / Voicemeter.
Allows you to mute what you hear but still transmit full volume to OBS via a virtual cable.

how are you turning off your sound?

if you're using speakers, turn down the volume on the speakers itself instead of windows volume

you could also plug in headphones or earphones (and turn down the volume on them)
