I have just started using the program and Im having a problem recording Desktop audio on Mac. I saw a post from a few years back saying you need a separate program in order to do this. Just wondering is this still the case?

No - the stickies in the forum about that sort of thing are badly out of date. There is now an input called macOS Audio Capture, and you can configure that to capture the desktop audio or a specific application. You do need recent versions of both OBS and macOS.
