Question / Help Dedicated machine for streaming

I currently have a AVerMedia Live HD Gamer in my computer, which I'm using for fullscreen captures. I doesn't relieve my computer of all the stress streaming puts onto my computer though. So I was thinking, what if I used my old computer as a dedicated machine for streaming.

The question I have for you is, how well would it perform. Would it be able to do 720p60? If not, how good quality do you think it could handle?

My old computer I'm thinking of using as a stream machine:
  • CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0GHz
  • RAM: 6GB DDR2
  • GFX: AMD Radeon HD 4870
  • HDD: Regular 7200 rpm hdd
  • Internet Connection: 100/100 Fiber

Do you mean a 2-computer streaming setup where you use the old comp for just streaming and encoding alone? That indeed can be pretty nice to do, makes it so you can play your games with zero impact from streaming -- though it does require that capture card, yea. The live gamer HD card will definitely be nice to have. Your old machine -should- be okay, at least I think. The only way to check is to just try streaming something at 720p 60fps with it through the capture card. Try hooking it up to an xbox or try just capturing bare desktop and see if it holds up performance. If it does then you should be fine I think.

Also I am majorly jelly of your fiber connection if that is indeed your actual speed.

Make sure your old computer has a good enough network card (on-board or discrete). Some old/cheap network cards can't handle high bitrate streaming. I have seen some old network cards to crash at heavy upstream load. Test and see what happens.

Guess I have to try it out then. The reason I asked is because it's acting as a linux server at the moment. I'll just throw in another hdd and install windows on that one.

What OS should I go with? XP or Win7/8?

And yes, that's my real speed :P

You will definetly be able to do 720p30, i used a slower 5200+ for that back in the day, maybe your higher CPU power is enough for 60 as well. But you will be nearing your limits.

Oh yea, and dont forget, you can just test it :D

And you can search for used but more powerful cpu since they are so cheap or even free. Check your mobos chipset and/or cpu support list to find a compatible cpu. For example my friend just got used Phenom II x4 965 BE for 10€
