Question / Help Decoding mp4 fileoutput

Hi guys,
i am using obs for a while now and i am excited. I capture game sessions to fileoutput with the goal the edit(cut) them later on.
However i got problems decoding the mp4 it creates...I figured mp4 isnt common to be edited so i assume i have to convert it to regular avi or smth. I used "XMedia Recode" to convert the mp4s into avis which basically worked great (easy to use program just like obs) but it seems to crash too often.

So my question is: Can you guys recommend me a program which is easy to use to convert the mp4s from obs to common avis? (I also tryed "MPEG_Streamclip" but it was unable to handle the mp4s at all.)

Thanks a lot for your advice and please be patient with me since i am far away from an expert... (;

Most decent editing software should be able to handle mp4, it's incredibly common these days. AVI is actually a bit of a pain to work with.

You may have to enable CFR in OBS advanced settings for some editing software to accept it, and make sure you are using AAC audio.

If you really need an easy to use conversion software, freemake video converter works perfect with mp4 files.

Can you specify that? I always thought AVI is kind of a "pure" format which is pretty easy to handle...?

Thanks for the hint. I used MP3 and in some editing programs (f.e. Magix video easy hd) it wouldnt load the sound . I'll put that on AAC now and try again....
Will also try CRF settings...

Well .avi file can be encoded in like any codec so it's the reason why avi might not be so easy to work with since some softwares doesn't support some codecs. Heres quote from Wikipedia about avi:
AVI is sometimes erroneously described as a codec, but AVI is actually a container format, while a codec is a software or hardware tool that encodes or decodes audio or video into or from some audio or video format. Audio and video encoded with many codecs might be put into an AVI container, although AVI is not an ISO standard.

With those settings you'll be fine for sure :p

Just a nit-pick: CFR and CRF are two very different things. I'm sure it's a typo, but I want to be clear: CFR = constant frame rate, and CRF = constant rate factor, used in determining target quality when using VBR (i.e. the Quality Balance setting). You want to use CFR (constant frame rate) when working with MP4s.

Hey guys,

just wanted to say a quick "thank you" for your help. I capture my DayZ games now and i am getting beautiful results.

Basically my fault was MP3 audio instead of AAC...Most editing software doenst seem to be able to handle it!

I didnt even had to enable CFR to get the vids working in the editing software. btw thanks for the typo hint dodgepong! (;

However, cheers guys!
