Dark screen when trying to use integrated webcam

While accessing the integrated webcam I get only a dark screen. I know the webcam is functioning as the the area around the lens lights up. I have tried updating the drivers and even un-installing and then re-installing the drivers with no success.
I would appreciate some thoughts. I am running windows 8.1
