Question / Help CPU to achieve Medium or slower encoding

Hey all,

I am looking to build a Streaming PC that can handle 720p@60fps with an ecoding speed of medium or slower for best quality.

What is the best processor to achieve this. Im not looking to break the bank either.

I was thinking 5820k or 4790k.

Thoughts?

Hi,

Assuming the pc is dedicated to streaming only I'm running and OC 5820k for this clocked @ 4.4 and this will encode at medium @ 720p 60fps. I haven't tried it at slower but there is some headroom.

I'm not sure there is much difference between med & slower there are a few post about around where the benefits are with CPU presets worth a look.

imo for encoding the more cores the better.

I hear ya on the cores. It would be a dedicated machine.replacing my current i7 920..... YEs that is a gen 1 i7 920.

It ALMOST does 720@60 but i want do 1080@30 at times in the near future as well.

The only reason im looking at the 4790 over the 5820 is not the cost of the cpu its the cost of the damn mobos x97 vs x99 is about 100$ difference.

The 4790k is a decent CPU worth having a look around see what people are streaming with it and should give you an idea on performance.

I use a 2-PC streaming system and have some insight:

For 720p, 60fps, at the "slow" 2x64 preset a intel 5960x or better is needed. That is the only CPU I have been able to get slow working on (I have tested 4770k, 4790, 6700k). That the slower presets, more cores really do matter, especially real cores.

I stream in 720p60 using slow at 4.5Mbps and it looks glorious. Take a look at my recent vods. :)

When using the 5960x, at 720p60 here are some usage stats
  • Medium: 25-50% CPU usage
  • Slow: 50-100% CPU usage
Slow REALLY cranks the settings and the CPU required.

placebo's childs play a 386 could run that and still be able to play doom, though you might need to hit that useless turbo button for extra bragging rights :-p

I am running 720p60 on Medium with an Xeon e5 2670 but I have quite some room left. When I tested my i7 2700k @ 4,5Ghz as a dedicated streaming PC I could run 720p60 on medium without any trouble as well.

Xeon is usually around 40% usage
i7 was around 60%

I Would say the 4790k should be fine but the 5820k will be better for the future when x265 gets mainstream.

I ended up getting a 6700k and overclocked it to 4.5ghz stable and am able to run it at slow with 70% cpu usage. I think this cpu will do the trick.
