Question / Help cpu optimization

hello,

just wondering if obs/cs:go will benefit from a cpu upgrade. i'm currently running an i5 2500k clocked at 4.0ghz and i noticed when i stream, my in game fps drops and is not smooth. cpu+gpu are both at a stable over clock and water cooled in a custom loop so no fault in heat/instability throttling.

when i dont stream, cs go is butter smooth. however, it gets choppy when i do stream :(

would an upgrade to say a 6core 3930k bring me improvements while streaming?

current specs:

cpu - i5 2500k @ 4.0ghz
ram - 8gb corsair dominator gt 1866mhz
gpu - evga hydro copper gtx 580 @ 900mhz core/2200mhz memory
ssd - 120gb intel 520
mobo - asus maximus gene iv
psu - corsair ax650w
internet - 50/3mb down/up

stream specs (off top of my head, not at home comp right now):

2450 bit rate
stream quality 6
30 fps
1080p monitor res
downscale to 720p stream
game source capture

thanks

It would definitely give you better performance, that's for sure. I assume you're asking because you want to know if the performance gain will be worth it, and that's harder to say.

Can you post your log with your current CPU? viewtopic.php?f=6&t=97

i'm at work right now so i'll post a log once i get home later. what i'm wondering is, will obs take full advantage of the 3930k (6core 12 threads) vs say an i7 4770k (4core 8 threads)

thanks

You should cap CS:GO's internal frame rate at something more reasonable than 300 (using the fps_max cvar) to reduce its CPU usage. Otherwise the game will be pushing 90% before you even begin streaming. For the cost of a 3930K and the new motherboard it would require you could just build a separate encoding box with a capture card and eliminate the performance hit entirely.

since you are on a socket 1155 board you could use an ivy bridge cpu if your motherboard got the needed bios updates for it ... in my opinion you should try to get a cheap i7 2600k or i7 2700k used since they are not going to get produced anymore

if your mainboard got the updates for the ivy bridge cpu's there would also be the i7 3770k litrerally all i7 will push the performance by an crazy amount for gaming + streaming performance compared to an i5 having the job done

but the cost of an 3930k+2011socket mainboard isnt worth it especially since theres the ivy-e series releases for like 2 or 3 months now so if you get a expensive as fuck cpu get the 4920k which would be qual to an 4770k (4core with ht) or the 4930k (6core with ht) but for hell of an price
