Question / Help Corrupt .MP4, didn't let it finish processing, repairable?

Hey guys,

First post here, just in need of some help.

I local recorded some work I did over the course of 5 hours, planning to go through the video and edit it as I go. After googling and searching around, it does seem I should have recorded in FLV as it would be easier to recover the video.

Basically,
I have a 5 hour video that finished recording, and about 10 minutes after it finished recording (note: it's still "processing" the .mp4), I accidentally closed OBS and clicked "No" on the dialogue that says if I want to continue to process the video. My brain assumed that "No" meant that I didn't want to close OBS, but I was wrong here.

Anyways, I am hoping that the 10 minutes I let it process is somehow salvageable, but I have had very little luck.

I've tried Grau GmbH's Video Repair Software and it looked promising and I can see random frames throughout the video, but for the most part it is distorted audio and video/frozen frames all over the place. This actually did help a little as I was able to screenshot a few things that may make it easier to redo everything.

I've also tried MP4repair.org, which seems to actually work on the preview, (I can hear the audio clearly and it's not distorted) but it asks me for $299 for that one file.

So... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There really isn't anything you can do; ran into this issue once, and changed to FLV after that. It's recommended to not save in MP4 because of this very issue.

Best thing to do is use this as a lesson learned, change the settings to save as FLV, and then convert the FLV using Handbreak or something similar.

Thanks for the reply.

My issue with giving up is that when I load the file onto MP4repair.org, the preview that it gives (seems to mostly be audio only for the preview) is 100% clean. Oh well, here's to hoping. :P

Nope. MP4 is not salvageable. You'll be able to get snips and bits of audio/video here and there, but it will never really recover the entire video file.

Record to FLV. You can remux quick and easy later if you need MP4 via ffmpeg (better than Handbrake). Plus, recording to MP4 seems to contribute to high-CPU issues.

YES and it's free. It is possible and it's been made relatively easy by this guy here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEdDm-UYPcs you only need to have a genuine sample of a video similar to that corrupted from which the "untrunc" program will copy the moov atom metadata.

Beware: this is not like all those Windows free/paid tools that don't work or just provide you with a messed up version of your video, this works for real. I just recovered a truncated .mp4 that I recorded with OBS, it got corrupted due to disk filling up.

I'm sure you will forgive me for necroposting.
