Question / Help Compatible Capture Cards

Greetings,
I'm looking to stream xbox games to twitch using a Mac, OBS and a capture card. I currently have used Hauppauge's HD PVR2 Gaming Edition to capture footage to my computer, however it seems that it is not compatible with OBS for Mac as I cannot get OBS to recognize it.
So I'm looking into getting a different capture card that will be compatible with OBS for Mac and I'm struggling to find any straightforward answers. Ideally it would be something I could just plug into my Mac, open OBS and recognize it. I would rather not have to "Window Capture" if possible, as that uses more CPU.
Is there a compatibility list that I can have confidence when purchasing a capture card, or maybe an explanation of how to better set up the stream using a Mac and OBS for Mac? Why would OBS exist for mac if it's so hard to find a capture card that's compatible with it?
I'm hoping there's an easy option, but there's not much I'm finding when searching online.
I can stream directly from my xbox to twitch, but ideally I want to incorporate OBS to have more overlays and what not.
Many thanks for the advice.

For macOS, you either want the Magewell USB3.0 card, or a Blackmagic Devices capture card.

I'm using the Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen 2, works well, but of course a bit on the pricey side

Ya those are all quite expensive. Would it be better to buy a cheap but powerful desktop PC for nearly the same price and then have a wider selection of capture cards to use on PC? I'm not going to be gaming from the computer, just using the computer to set up the stream.

How cheap and powerful would a PC have to be to be worth avoiding buying a $300 capture device so you can use a $60 capture device instead?

I'm just wondering what other unseen roadblocks there will be by using Mac. What software or basic stream process am I going to run into that won't be compatible because I'm using a Mac?

The major unseen roadblock is that Elgato does not provide Mac drivers, so if you use their hardware on MacOS, you must use their software. Other than that, OBS will perform measurably better on the same hardware under Linux or Windows than under MacOS.

Also, studio mode will drop your framerate in MacOS; this does not happen in Linux or Windows.

On windows there exists an OBS plugin which allows you to stream as a webcam, so you can stream from OBS to any application which expects a webcam, on OSX that's not possible
Other than that i didn't encounter any roadblocks.

When comparing the capture cards you should not just look on the price. If you look at the reviews of many of the cheaper cards you will see that many users have problems with these devices, be it because they require proprietary drivers, because they are not made to run many hours and get too hot and then crash, they provide low bandwidth, or whatever.
If you look for example at the Elgato Game Capture HD60, it costs half of what the Magewell costs, but you have to mess around with their drivers / software and the bandwidth is limited to 40mbps. The Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen 2 has been working flawlessly for me, just plug it in, no trouble with drivers.

The NDI plugin does something similar and is cross-platform, working on MacOS, Linux and Windows. You can output any scene and audio source(s) from an instance of OBS running on a local network and use it as a source on any other copy of OBS operating on the same local network, as long as both instances have the NDI plugin installed and running.

For a lot of applications, though, a hardware capture card would be better.

The AverMedia LIVE Gamer Portable 2 works fine ! Almost same price as the ELGATO. I'am using it with MAC OS Sierra + OBS

Hi to all!

I'm still looking for a reliable and cheaper option of the "Magewell USB 3.0 HDMI Video Capture Dongle" but I have noticed that Amazon is suggesting me similar cards but at a fraction of the cost of the Magewell, these are:

-

AGPtEK HDMI Game Capture Card USB 3.0 HD Video 1080P 60FPS ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074863G5...13&pd_rd_r=2MH0X9NRAXBX2WCZ992B&pd_rd_w=4Amuc )

Imillet HDMI Video Capture with USB3.0/2.0 Dongle 1080P 60FPS Drive-Free Capture Card (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...c-c026-40ae-aac5-2cd3d48aeeac&pf_rd_i=desktop)

Have any of guys used any of the above under OBS?

Thanks!

When you use USB hdmi capture card , you need notice as below

1. USB3.0 comptaible issue
USB3.0 mode: win10 / mac osx. + intel cpu + USB3.0 port
anther : it can not be USB3.0 mode

some usb3.0 capture card CAN NOT be compaitible for USB2.0 mode
eg: elgato camlink cam not work on usb2.0 mode

2. HDMI source:
some grabber card do not have video scaler.
so, it can not accept 1080i video source.
eg: elgato camlink

3. camera
not all of camera can be live output video and audio
and some camera will show camera information

you can reference the video demo
