changing proportion sizes

is there a way of changing the proportion sizes of a source when added to a scene.
i have looked in all the settings and scaling but nothing i do seems to change it.
i.e if i add an image thats rectangular in shape can i manipulate the scale/proportion to make it square ect
everytime i change its shape using the outline squares ect it makes it larger/smaller on both axis not just the axis i am moving

Hole down the ALT key and then drag the bounding box sides how you want.

You can also try TRANSFORM.. Right click the source and select transform.

In case you want to distort the image and change the aspect ratio, hold down SHIFT while dragging the window border.
